Children's Literature - Margaret Jackson
This is a gorgeous book with pictures of people doing all sorts of different jobs. But the illustrations evoke the 1930s rather than the 1990s. Even the people working on computers seem old fashioned. The art is reminiscent of FDR's WPA projects but its nostalgic appeal will be lost on today's children. Paulsen's lyrical prose also seems inaccessible from the first line in the book that accompanies a drawing of a man sawing wood: "It is keening noise and jolting sight...."
