Jane Austen

Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English author known primarily for her six major novels set among the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Considered defining works of the Regency Era and counted among the best–loved classics of English literature, Austen's books include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. The latter two were published after her death. "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." – Jane Austen

Jane Austen Books

Find all the most cherished books by English author, Jane Austen, at Barnes & Noble. Jane Austen’s books have been widely read and celebrated for over 200 years. Her classic novel Pride and Prejudice which follows the romantic pursuits of Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters is still read and analyzed in English literature classes all over the world. Austen’s other popular books include Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Mansfield Park. The author saw little fame during her lifetime, because she published her novels anonymously due to societal expectations for women at the time. Jane Austen’s last fully completed novel, Persuasion, which follows the financially troubled young woman, Anne Elliot, who grapples with regret over ending her engagement to a wealthy navy captain, was published posthumously and is one of her most celebrated works. Austen’s writing is considered special, because she not only utilized literary realism, depicting everyday experiences of society of her time, but also incorporated comedy and free indirect discourse that allowed her readers to dive deeply into the most-inner thoughts of her characters. Austen’s distinctive literary style transcends time with her books like Emma, Pride and Prejudice and others being made into blockbuster and television movies again and again.
