10 Things We Hope to See in the New Shadowhunters TV Show

Alright, I admit it: I’ve been fantasizing about a Mortal Instruments TV show since the day I first saw the book cover for City of Bones, and obsessively dream-casting it for months now. Don’t get me wrong, Lily Collins is amazing and the Mortal Instruments movie was okay, but it left a little something to be desired—namely, faithful adherence to and portrayal of every single minor detail Cassandra Clare wrote. And even though the new Shadowhunters TV show, premiering TOMORROW, doesn’t promise to be a blow-by-blow recounting of the book series, I’m still dying to watch it. And here are 10 things I’m dying to see when I do.

1. All the little details the movie missed.
Every fan has their own favorite bit of minutiae. So how do you make all the fans happy? Capture ALL the minutiae. Okay, okay, I know they can’t possibly cover everything, but I’m hoping that more episodes = more screen time = more time to slow things down and really work with the plot. In fact, I’d be happy if the show was dragged out for approximately 10 billion seasons, so the slower the better.
2. Katherine McNamara kicking some serious butt.
What’s one of the best parts of the Mortal Instruments series? Having a badass female lead. And Clary Fray, with her brilliant hair and natural skill for demon hunting, had better be that badass female lead for us. As far as I’m concerned, these episodes can be 85% Clary kicking and punching and proving what a hardcore heroine she is. Everything else can hang out on the back burner.
3. Cool fantasy being cool fantasy.
Fantasy shows tend to get kind of a bad rep—or at least a dorky one. But with the irrefutable awesomeness of Star Wars still on everyone’s mind, now’s the time to prove how cool a break from reality can be. I’m biased, but I think Shadowhunters has the potential to show the world supernatural series aren’t just about out-cheesing each other over and over again (or at least they’re not just that).

4. Lots of Harry Shum, Jr., as Magnus Bane.
I think we can all agree one of the best parts of Glee was Harry Shum, Jr., so the fact that he’s going to be decorating our screen as the inimitable Magnus Bane, already the highlight of the book series, is pretty much as “dream cast” as it gets. If these producers know what they’re doing, they’ll have Harry in the background (if not the foreground) of every. single. shot, including the closing credits. Will he get song and dance numbers? One can only hope.
5. A Draco Malfoy reference or two.
Every real fan knows Jace’s character had his earliest beginnings in Cassandra Clare’s Draco trilogy (although there have obviously been some very large changes). What better way to make us chuckle than to throw a little recognition toward the bad boy who started it all? Personally, I’d be happy just to see Jace wearing Slytherin colors once or twice—yes, I know this is a long shot, but a girl can dream, right?
6. Heart-stopping demons.
What’s the most important part of a TV show about demon-slaying? (Besides the aforementioned butt-kicking heroine and constant Harry Shum appearances, of course.) The demons. I don’t know what kind of budget Shadowhunters is working with as far as special effects go, but I’m really hoping they put some work into making them look as scary as possible.

7. References to The Infernal Devices.
As excited as I am for Shadowhunters (and I am VERY excited), it’s nothing to my fangirling at the thought of an Infernal Devices TV show, which starts with hyperventilation and ends somewhere near homemade cardboard character cutouts spread throughout my home. If there’s any goodness and love in the world, this show will be filled with little hints at Victorian-era spinoffs and maybe even a show focused solely on the life of Magnus Bane (please, please, please let that happen).
8. More diversity.
A lot of people have pointed out that ABC is good at embracing diversity when it csomes to their TV shows, so we’ve got our fingers crossed that Shadowhunters continues that trend. Whether it’s the Magnus/Alec dynamic or non-whitewashed casting (preferably both), this is the perfect chance to keep adding representation to YA worlds—and I really hope they make the most of it.
9. Even more Clary/Jace action.
I admit, I’m a sucker for a good love scene, especially one involving two of my favorite characters. And with the whole fear-of-incest thing going on, you know there’s going to be some great drama and angst surrounding any onscreen hanky-panky these two get up to.
10. Runes, runes, and more runes.
There’s just something so undeniably cool about Shadowhunters’ runes. So if we don’t get some nice, long shots of their beautiful, intricate designs (and maybe even the application of a rune or two), well, that’s just a wasted opportunity.
