12 Image Comics Titles Kelly Sue DeConnick Loves

Image Comics turns 25 this month. To celebrate, all month long Barnes & Noble is offering a free Image title when you buy two. If you’re looking for suggestions on what to pick up next, we’ve got you covered: we’ve asked some of the top creators in the business to let us know which Image titles are on their must lists. Today, we’ve got 10 (well, technically 12) recommendations from Kelly Sue DeConnick, the force behind the incendiary Image titles Bitch Planet and Pretty Deadly.

Casanova, by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba
My husband scripts this book, so I’m biased, but I love it. I love it because it’s Fraction, Bá and Moon with the brakes off. Inventive, irreverent and unpredictable.
The Wicked + the Divine, by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie
Viva la POP.
I.D. by Emma Ríos/Mirror: The Mountain, by Emma Ríos and Hwei Lim
Works by my Pretty Deadly collaborator, Emma Ríos — ID, on her own, and Mirror, with the phenomenally talented Hwei Lim. Taiyo Matsumoto is my favorite Japanese creator and I can see his influence on Emma in ID. Mirror reminds me how lucky I am to work with her — she doesn’t need me, and can do both our jobs.
American Flagg, by Howard Chaykin
Chaykin. Hyper-masculine men and hyper-sexual women, this is off-brand for me, but I love Howard all the same, and truly, he understands and plays with the medium like few others. American Flagg is a master class.

Criminal, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips
I always think I have Brubaker figured out and he always surprises me. His ARCHIE COMICS homage predicted RIVERDALE. And the Brubaker/Phillips partnership is one of those that feels like a single voice.
Lazarus, by Greg Rucka, Owen Freeman, and Michael Lark
Greg and I are stylistically very different writers, but we both write with our blood up. And often, over similar issues. Lazarus shares something of its lizard brain with Bitch Planet, though, I might be the only one who can see that. And Lark? What can you say about Lark? Comics for people who don’t think they like comics. I defy you to resist Michael Lark.

I’m jealous of this book.

Autumnlands, by Kurt Busiek, Ben Dewey, and Jordie Bellaire
So very beautiful.
