Produced by Roots alumni Questlove and Black Thought, Hamilton is more than just the soundtrack to a rap-influenced musical; it takes a step that was long overdue on Broadway, blending American history and culture as it pulls from hip-hop and R&B to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton’s life. Not only that, but it makes for a really good hip-hop album on its own merits. The original cast shines throughout, with impressive flow that subverts, but does not lose, the enunciation and cleverness of classic Broadway.

The soundtrack is also available as a collectible, four-disc vinyl box set, which comes in a two-piece, hardcover box. The four LPs in the set have printed sleeves and are accompanied by a 12″ x 12″ lyric booklet and a download card redeemable for a copy of the digital album. Hamilton author Lin-Manuel Miranda collaborated with critic and theater artist Jeremy McCarter on this one-of-a-kind book, best described as a backstage pass to the show. This full account of the show’s journey—from Miranda’s initial idea, to its original form as The Hamilton Mixtape, to taking Broadway by storm and redefining what is possible in musical theatre—is told through photography, interviews with multiple people involved with the production (and President Obama!), and Miranda’s footnotes, notebook entries, and emails, as well as the full text of the show’s libretto.

And for fans who can’t get tickets to the live show (which are impossible to get, in all fairness), there’s an audiobook of Hamilton: the Revolution. Like the print version, it covers the creation and story of the Broadway show, with coauthors Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy Carter reading the introduction and annotations, respectively, while the prose sections will be narrated by none other than Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay, an unashamed Hamilton superfan who is thrilled to be part of the team. “Lin-Manuel’s Hamilton enthralls me,” she told Entertainment Weekly, “and to think that I get to play a part in telling the story of how this masterpiece came into existence, it’s really just a lot to take in.”
