5 Wordless Picture Books for Kids of All Ages

The first time I ever read a book without any words, I fell in love. It was The Red Book, by Barbara Lehman. I begrudgingly took it from the librarian’s hands when she told me to give it a try. As a writer, I had a love of words. Could a story really move me and entertain me without the grace of well-crafted sentences and dialogue?
After two pages, I had my answer: Yes, it can.
It can build mystery, it can pull at emotions, and it can make you turn the page faster than even the most enticing words. And kids love them.
When I bring home a book without any words, it’s always the first book from the pile they grab. And since that day many years ago when I read my first one, I have discovered a solid list of five favorites that a child of any age will enjoy.

Flotsam, by David Wiesner
Every child dreams of finding a note in a bottle washed up on a beach shore. But what happens when instead of a bottle, an underwater camera lands on the sand at your feet? An amazing discovery story of where one camera has traveled over many years. From incredible illustrations to a wild imagination of inventions, Flotsam goes below the surface into the kind of world kids dream of stumbling upon.
Museum Trip, by Barbara Lehman
When a young boy accidentally separates from his classmates on a school trip to the art museum, the reader gets a glimpse into his whimsical journey, including an investigation into the artifacts and history being displayed. Children will love puzzling over the mazes the little boy must get himself out of, and discovering where his adventures will take him next.

Zoom, by Istvan Banyai
Realizing that we are just a small speck in the great world around us is a very challenging concept for children to understand. But through Zoom, we have the chance to see how each small picture leads to something greater, as the illustrations focus in on the tiniest details, and then zoom out, as though you’re looking through a camera’s lens, showing how these details fit into the greater picture. A startling and wondrous book that will amaze your child and teach them how with a different perspective, things can change right before our eyes.

Fossil, by Bill Thomson
The magic of finding something old and imagining what life was like at that time is the heart of Fossil. Through realistically drawn illustrations, we see what would happen if fossils, from animals such as dinosaurs and dragonflies, came back to life as soon as we found their remains. It’s one wordless picture book that will keep the kids turning pages almost faster than you can explore them.

Journey, by Aaron Becker
Explore the power of a single red marker: When a bored little girl takes her entertainment into her own hands, she uses a red marker to draw all the adventures her imagination is capable of creating. From a decorated castle, to a magic carpet ride, the astonishing things that a child can imagine are endless. Journey is a beautifully drawn book that shows not only the power of creativity, but of having the confidence and courage to go on a journey all on your own.
