Johnny Appleseed: A Tall Tale Retold and Illustrated, by Steven Kellogg
Perhaps no one is more associated with apples than American folk hero Johnny Appleseed (Aka John Chapman)! Planting apple orchards as he explored the new frontier of the Wild West, Johnny Appleseed is a great historical character to spend some time with. This book brings Johnny’s apple-themed adventures to life with the help of Kellogg’s gorgeous detailed illustrations. (Kellogg spoke at my elementary school when I was in the 3rd grade, and I have been a fan ever since!)

Apple Farmer Annie, by Monica Wellington
This is the perfect book to read the night before you go apple picking! Annie is a farmer who grows and sells her own apples. When she harvests them she turns them into all sorts of delicious treats like applesauce, cakes, and apple pies! And once you pick your own apples, come home and use one of Annie’s recipes for a truly delicious reading experience!

Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie, by Herman Parish and Lynne Avril
Anyone who has read an Amelia Bedelia book before will know that when Amelia goes to bake an apple pie with her grandparents things will not go as planned! But hopefully things will go more smoothly in your kitchen because you can bake the pie as well (the recipe is included) once you finish reading about Amelia’s zany misadventures! (As a fan of the later books, it’s also neat to see Amelia as a kid!)
