6 More Picture Books You’ll Love Reading Aloud

We Are in a Book! (Elephant and Piggie Series), by Mo Willems
Mo Willems’ hilarious books are perfect to read aloud, particularly the self-aware story of elephant and piggie in We are in a Book!. Once these characters realize that they are in a book and being looked at by a reader who is reading them, they also realize that they can get this reader to say whatever comes out of their speech bubbles! Your young reader will laugh along with these hysterical animals as you are instructed to say “banana” again, and again, and again.

If the S in Moose Comes Loose, by Peter Hermann, illustrated by Matthew Cordell 
This fun book is a great way to start teaching your toddler spelling, without it feeling like homework! When Moose loses an S and an E all chaos breaks out and cow’s friend moose vanishes. Cow needs to get these letters back, in an alphabet-themed caper that will make learning letters a blast.

I Am Peace: A Book of Mindfulness, by Susan Verde, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds 
This soothing book is perfect for bedtime, or any time you want to find some inner peace and take a moment to be more mindful. (We could all use that!) Even most adults will be able to relate to lines like “There are times when I worry about what might happen next and what happened before.” Take a deep breath, read this book in a quiet and calm voice, and channel your inner yogi.

Wordy Birdy, by Tammi Sauer, illustrated by Dave Mottram 
Wordy birdy has a LOT to say, from the moment she wakes up to the moment she goes to sleep! Even her animal friends are growing a little tired of all her chatter. But her endless stream of babble and questions (“Is Bigfoot real? Are we there yet?”) makes for a fun read, and just like birdy says at the end of the book you will probably find yourself reading this one “again and again and again…”

Fox in Socks, by Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss was a genius at writing books that are super fun to read, and reread, aloud. His talent at writing the funniest and wackiest rhyming verses is unparalleled which makes it hard to choose just one! (You can’t go wrong with the classic Green Eggs and Ham either.) With lines like “Knox on fox in socks on box” this tongue twister of a book will have your young reader laughing and trying to sound out the words themselves.

Interrupting Chicken, by David Ezra Stein
If your young reader has a habit of interrupting every bedtime story, then this is the book for them! Little red chicken can’t help but jump in and interrupt each fairy tale story, from Little Red Riding Hood to Hansel and Gretel, that papa chicken tells her before bed. Luckily this book is so engrossing and funny, that your little interrupter may just listen quietly the whole way through. (Don’t count on it, though.)
