6 of the Best Middle Grade Road Trip Novels

Who’s up for a road trip? There’s something reflective and personal about riding along that yellow line. You watch the world from a window; listen to the steady hum of the radio until you reach static and a new station croaks in. You dream about where you’re going and where you’ve been, then stretch your legs at some ketchup-y rest stop.
In literature, stories on the road tend to exist in the dream-like space between past and future. Characters either run from where they’ve been or race toward something new, and the journey always has lessons to teach about coming, going, and staying. These six middle grade stories are some of the best the road has to offer, so, as summer kicks in and you set off on your own cross country adventures, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Survival Strategies of the Almost Brave, by Jen White

Struggling with fear and anger in the hot desert sand, Liberty strategizes as best she can to find a way toward home.
Sisters, by Raina Telgemeier
This graphic memoir for young readers, a companion book to Telgemeier’s Smile, is a look at sisterhood. The author explores their complicated relationship through flashbacks as she sets off on a road trip from San Francisco to the California Rockies for a family reunion. Through her signature art and humor, Telgemeier shares the importance of family in this simple but affective tale of two sisters.
