7 Books About the Wonderful World of Grandparents

Grandparents have the best job in the world. They are done with all the time-outs and nap times, finished with the 3rd grade math and carpools and after school practices. Instead, they get to sit back and watch, amused at our foibles as we attempt to figure out this whole parenting thing. Their days are now filled with their sweet grandchildren’s hugs and kisses while they think up one more way to spoil our kids. “What, you don’t need a drum set in the living room? But the kids have musical ability!” they protest. “You don’t want thousands more little Lego pieces underfoot at your house? The children like to build!” Just remember, though: One day, we’ll get to do the same thing [to our kids] for our own grandkids. In the meantime, here are a few fun books highlighting the beloved bond between our little ones and their doting grandparents.

Do your children know how to correctly babysit their grandfather? How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan will tell them how through precise instructions, such as what snacks to serve a grandpa (hint: ketchup!). Other important knowledge a child should have is how to go about waking up a sleeping grandpa, and tips on saying goodbye at the end of their time together. This is a super-fun read that will please both kids and grandfathers alike.

How to Babysit a Grandma, by Jean Reagan
The follow-up to How to Babysit a Grandpa, Jean Reagan’s How to Babysit a Grandma is equally delightful. When babysitting a grandmother, children should plan out fun things to do during their time together, such as going to the park, devising new games to play, and deciding where to sleep (maybe not a tent). Grandmothers and children will love reading this together and thinking up their own ideas to include.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl
Who doesn’t love this book (and the iconic film adaptation)? Whether you are a fan of the Oompa-Loompas or not (my husband is decidedly not), you can’t help but be swept up into Willy Wonka’s world of enchantment, where a magical Chocolate Factory features such delights as a chocolate waterfall and lickable wallpaper. Roald Dahl is a wonderful storyteller who weaves together morals and silliness all in one. Charlie Bucket and his Grandpa Joe go on the adventure of a lifetime in this beloved classic, and the special bond between grandchild and grandfather is showcased in their shared love for wonder.
