7 Comic Book Heroines Who Deserve Their Own Movie

It’s kind of shocking to realize, 15 years into the comic book movie golden age that began with the first X-Men film, that we’ve yet to see one headlined by a female superhero. Luckily, that will change, well, not soon, but: Marvel, that bastion of male power, will release Captain Marvel in 2018, and D.C. is gearing up for Wonder Woman as well.
These are exciting developments, but also, just a drop in the bucket. There are plenty of other comic book heroines who totally deserve to get some face time on the big screen, starting with the 7 outlined below.

Black Canary
If you’ve been watching The CW’s Arrow, you’ve probably seen Black Canary as a sort of weak backup to the Arrow—but she deserves so much better. Inspired by her crime fighting parents to become a superhero, Black Canary (aka Dinah Laurel Lance) can kick butt with the best of them. She’s the superhero version of having it all: She runs her own florist shop, she’s married to the super rich, super hot Oliver Queen, and she can fly on sonic waves that she creates with her own vocal cords. How’s that for inspiring?

Raven
Raven isn’t your typical heroine. She’s not exactly the most outgoing girl in the crime-fighting club; a lifetime of suppressing her emotions has made her sardonic, dry, and more than a little reserved. But as a telekinetic half-demon capable of pretty much everything, we’re pretty sure she’d make a great movie star.

Hawkgirl
Hawkgirl has always been underrated, possibly because her costume is so awful. But look past those terrible clothes and you’ll find a kickass winged girl with several lifetimes’ worth of fighting experience under her magical belt. Seriously, she flies around carrying a mace—who wouldn’t want to see her take on half a dozen super villains?
Natasha Irons
When her uncle Steel is too injured to save the world, Natasha Irons takes over the family superhero business. Like Iron Man, Natasha’s armor gives her superhuman strength and the ability to fly. Unlike Iron Man, Natasha is level-headed and logical, and we are so ready to see a smart lady like her take on the big screen.
Jenny Sparks
Jenny Sparks’ storyline has all the makings of a great superhero movie: She’s got the ability to manipulate electricity, making her a total energy powerhouse, but more importantly, she’s constantly influencing historical people and events. Top it off with the knowledge that, after being stuck at age 19 for a decades, she’s going to die at the end of the 20th century, and you’ve got just the kind of doomed hero you can’t help but fall for.
Colleen Wing & Misty Knight
Superhero movies love the dynamic duo trope (Batman and Robin, anyone?), but what if both members of the duo were girls? Colleen Wing and Misty Knight are just your average besties…but with super crime-fighting skills and a private detective agency.
Cassie Hack
And for a totally different superhero movie, we’ve got Cassie Hack, a shy, awkward girl who just happens to be a vigilante. The story of how Cassie was motivated by guilt to become a crime fighter after her mother murdered the classmates who were bullying her would make an excellent, highly relatable screenplay—because really, aren’t we all still that little wallflower on the inside?
