9 Books for Kids Excited About the Total Solar Eclipse

On August 21, 2017, parts of the United States will fall under the path of a total solar eclipse—an event that won’t happen here again until 2024. The solar eclipse will go from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast, traveling through Oregon to South Carolina, viewable to anyone in its path (with the proper safety precautions). During this time, the moon will block the sun’s light, and the moon will cast a shadow over parts of Earth. For those people at the center of the moon’s shadow, the sky will appear dark.

In addition to just being pretty cool, solar eclipses also allow astronomers to learn more about the our sun’s outer layer, helping scientists better understand the space environment that satellites and astronauts must travel through. With all this excitement, now is the perfect time to nurture a young child’s interest in space—so we’ve picked out some great books to keep your kids learning and talking about space.
