A New Dr. Seuss Book, What Pet Should I Get? Is Now Available for Pre-Order

Thrilling news: a brand new, previously unpublished Dr. Seuss book has been discovered, and will arrive in bookstores on July 28th!
What on earth will we do until July besides pre-order the book and reread the entire Seuss canon in anticipation (and, you know, for fun, since it is the Seuss canon)? More importantly, how lucky are we that we’ll get to lay eyes on a completely original literary work from the incomparable mind that dreamed up the Sneetches, the Cat in the Hat, and the Grinch, among other beloved creatures? How on earth did this happen?
It happened in the very ordinary way that such extraordinary discoveries frequently occur; in this case, during a cleaning spree. In 2013 Theodor Seuss Geisel’s widow, Audrey, was tidying up his office and discovered the manuscript in a box of Geisel’s sketches and materials. It had been put aside during an earlier home remodel and was hidden away for over 20 years after the author’s death in 1991.
The new book, entitled What Pet Should I Get? is about a thrilling and nearly universal childhood challenge: that of choosing a pet. The publisher estimates that the manuscript was written between 1958 and 1962, as it features the same adorable brother and sister we know from the Seussian classic One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The idea that the story of this fabled pair is continued in an additional book is delightful, and since Dr. Seuss knows a thing or two about wondrous and enchanting creatures, his tale of the memorable experience of pet-choosing is sure to win the hearts of readers of all ages.

While the discovery of a completely new book by Dr. Seuss is exhilarating, the reissue of some of his more obscure but previously published work is not without precedent; fans may remember that last year, four rediscovered essays by Dr. Seuss were collected in a new book called Horton and the Kwuggerbug and Other Lost Stories. The pieces had originally been featured in Redbook magazine in the 1950s, but were largely unknown to modern readers.
The most exciting part of this wonderful surprise is the fact that today’s young readers (and their parents!) will have the priceless experience of reading a brand new Dr. Seuss book together for the first time. What Pet Should I Get? is destined to become a classic addition to Dr. Seuss’s timeless collection of beloved children’s books.
