An Introduction to the Beloved Books of P.D. Eastman

P.D. Eastman’s name may not be as familiar as that of Dr. Seuss or Mo Willems, but chances are you learned to read from his easy reader books. Eastman, born in 1909 in Amherst, Massachusetts, got his big break as an illustrator when he took a job at Walt Disney Productions in 1936. In 1941, he switched over to the Warner Brothers cartoon department. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army—and was assigned to the Signal Corps Film Unit headed by Theodor Geisel. Eastman kept in touch with Dr. Seuss after the war and started writing and illustrating children’s books for Dr. Seuss’s Beginner Books series at Random House. Eastman died in 1986, but his family legacy lives on—one of his sons, Peter, became an illustrator too, and has drawn new illustrations for several reissues of his dad’s books. Here are 6 great books that will familiarize you (and your kids) with the work of P.D. Eastman.
