And the Winner is: 2023 National Book Awards Edition

The 74th National Book Awards were presented tonight in New York City, and hosted by the inimitable Levar Burton. The evening included remarks from special guest Oprah Winfrey; the presentation of the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community to Paul Yamazaki by Mitchell Kaplan; and the presentation of the 2023 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to former US Poet Laureate Rita Dove by poet and Pulitzer Prize finalist Jericho Brown, who included a reading of Dove’s poem “Canary.”
(Past recipients of the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community include Maya Angelou and Dave Eggers; past recipients of the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters include Ray Bradbury and Arthur Miller.)
