Page-To-Screen Adaptations We Are Still Talking About

The power of a good story can be measured by how it is retold over and over again. Sometimes, a new adaptation can offer a fresh perspective. Other times, a book is adapted into something so different from the original text that fans might just pretend it doesn’t even exist. It can be hit or miss, and there are plenty of Wuthering Heights adaptations out there to prove it. Here are some of our favorite page-to-screen moments we are still talking about…and why you the book is worth your time.

Gorgeous writing, a magnificent plot and the exquisite exploration of love and loss make this a can’t-miss novel from the talented voice of Maggie O’Farrell. The movie adaptation, which was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, was praised for its connection to the source material and its gut-wrenching performances.
The Verdict: Both equally heartbreaking, Maggie O’Farrell’s exceptional novel offers vivid prose that can’t be missed.

Emerald Fennell’s highly anticipated adaptation of Wuthering Heights was released recently, receiving mixed reviews. Emily Brontë’s nineteenth-century novel is an unnerving story about revenge, class rage, obsession and ultimately breaking the cycle of abuse. The visually stunning 2026 movie, like many adaptations that came before it, is about the tragic romance between two star-crossed lovers and doesn’t touch on any other themes. There are moments of the campy perversion promised in the trailers and promotion, but they are ultimately played for laughs in a bizarre tonal disconnect. Filled with mystery, intrigue and ghosts, the book is a classic for a reason.
The Verdict: You can’t out-crazy Emily Brontë.

It was inevitable that one of Freida McFadden’s tales would go on to become a highly-anticipated film, and The Housemaid is the perfect thriller to watch play out on the big screen. The story of a housemaid and an unreliable housewife keeps you guessing until the final page— literally. While it’s exciting to see twists unfold on the screen, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried played the roles well, there is nothing like reading the full story.
The Verdict: Somehow, the jump scares are even scarier when you are reading them, not watching them.

Was the Twilight movie a hit? Yes. Was it also a miss? In some ways, also yes. The movie adaptation, starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, was panned by critics but celebrated (mostly) by fans of the beloved Stephenie Meyer book series. One thing is for certain: the book series changed the game when it came to paranormal fantasy, and the movies brought a whole new wave of readers to the genre. Despite major differences between the books and movies, the series remains culturally significant enough to keep readers wanting more, year after year.
The Verdict: The movie series is always good for a rewatch, but the book series is the best place to go in order to form your own opinions on Edward vs. Jacob.

When this dystopian series hit theaters, fans of The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner showed up fast. The story really taps into that teenage feeling of figuring out who you are, even when the world wants to label you. The movie leans into action and romance, while the book spends more time in Tris’ head and what it means to not fully belong anywhere.
The Verdict: The adaptation feels young and surface-level, but the book connects with people of all ages.

Brad Pitt (and his long blond tresses) anchors this deathly urgent tale of a worldwide zombie outbreak and a race for the cure to stop it. When it comes to the utter terror of the undead hurling themselves at you, the film provides a fun watch, but it is only told through the eyes of Pitt’s character, while the book offers more perspectives on the world-ending outbreak.
The Verdict: Both enjoyable, but there is even more zombie horror in the source material.

Another ambitious story where the world-building didn’t quite translate to the screen. Despite its status as a classic fantastical fable, the movie adaptation of this swirling time travel tale fell flat on the big screen. For such an adventurous story, the movie failed to captivate much of an audience by dulling its magic.
The Verdict: For real worldbuilding, explore the book instead of the subpar movie.

The Hate U Give is a must-read story about race, community and doing what’s right through the eyes of a teen who witnesses a violent crime. The movie, starring Amandla Stenberg, brings important themes to the big screen and does a solid job telling such a complex story.
The Verdict: The movie features moving performances, while the book delves deeper into urgent themes important for young readers to grasp.

There are plenty of Stephen King books worthy of a big-screen adaptation. There are also plenty of Stephen King books that are almost too expansive to ever translate to the screen, and The Gunslinger might be one of those. Despite the all-star cast, the movie’s approach to the Dark Tower universe was difficult for readers unfamiliar with the source material to follow, resulting in a muddled mix of King lore. The Dark Town saga lives on through its many sequels, but it doesn’t seem like we will get a faithful screen adaptation anytime soon.
The Verdict: The story is hard to follow in movie form, but King’s many other Dark Tower tales are worth your time.

Stephen King famously did not love Stanley Kubrick’s movie adaptation of his horror classic The Shining. While both the movie and the book are good in their own ways, the book has much more worldbuilding that is completely eliminated in the movie, making the book (and its sequel) a more immersive experience. But the movie is worth it for Jack Nicholson’s facial expressions alone, so consider that.
The Verdict: On its own, Stanley Kubrick’s vision for The Shining becomes a perfect horror movie. But the movie opens up an entire universe that is never truly uncovered.

Spielberg delivers the spectacle, but Cline delivers the depth. The novel expands the high-stakes treasure hunt into layered quests filled with 80s pop-culture puzzles, grounded characters and real-world stakes beneath the nostalgia. Wade Watts may sound like a superhero name, but his journey is far more human. For an extra treat, the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton adds personality and humor that fits the story perfectly.
The Verdict: The movie is fun — the book is immersive. Happy Gunting!

Set during the social upheaval of the 1960s, both the novel and Academy Award-winning film follow intertwined lives that challenge the lines society draws and the courage it takes to cross them. Stockett builds rich perspectives through Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter, allowing readers to feel each voice individually while understanding their shared humanity. The film honors the heart of the story, but the book deepens the emotional connections.
The Verdict: The movie shows the story. The book lets you hear their voices.

A cornerstone of modern science fiction, Dune shaped the genre long before its film adaptation. Herbert explores power, religion, ecology and family politics within a futuristic, spice-filled society that often feels eerily prophetic. We especially recommend the full-cast audiobook for an experience that feels just as cinematic as the movie, while preserving the story’s depth.
The Verdict: Watch for the visuals. Read for the philosophy.

In a dazzling feat of biography, history, science and politics, Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin tell the extraordinary story of Robert Oppenheimer — physicist, Director of Los Alamos, and “father of the atomic bomb.” Christopher Nolan takes this story to the big screen in the Academy Award-winning film, Oppenheimer, with Cillian Murphy taking on the titular role.
The Verdict: While Christopher Nolan’s movie is an epic watch, the expansive biography is factually accurate and detailed. Both are thrilling portrayals of a complex life.

Colm Toibin delivers an emotionally resonant tale that explores the immigrant experience and what it means to be American through the eyes of Ellis, an Irish woman living in Brooklyn in the 1950s. The movie, which secured numerous award nominations, stars Saoirse Ronan and accurately captures the heart of the story, but the book allows you to really immerse yourself in Ellis’ narrative.
The Verdict: The movie is a fantastic watch, but the book lingers with you for a long time thanks to its memorable protagonist.

While the film adaptation of Eragon was praised for its action sequences and special effects, fans of the book series may notice that key characters and plot points were altered or omitted entirely from the big screen. Fantasy is a challenging genre to adapt to film while remaining faithful to the source material, as there are many elements to work into a limited amount of time, and Eragon is no exception. Although the movie never got its intended sequel, readers can still dive into the original books for a complete, classic fantasy adventure, especially now that Paolini has revisited the series with a new installment, Murtagh.
The Verdict: If the movie left you wanting more, check out the books to find what you’re looking for.
