5 Books That Bring D-Day to Life for Young Readers

D-Day: Battle on the Beach (Ranger in Time #7), by Kate Messner (Ranger in Time #7)
Ranger isn’t a certified rescue dog, but he sure is good at helping folks in trouble, even when it means traveling back in time! In his seventh adventure, Ranger finds himself on Omaha Beach in Normandy on the morning of the D-Day invasion. There are plenty of people to help in the terrifying chaos, and Ranger saves Walt, an African-American soldier, from the mines buried in the sand. But Ranger senses this isn’t his real mission, and follows his instincts to the farm where Leo, a Jewish boy in hiding, is in great danger. The inclusion of Leo’s story makes D-Day relatable to kids, and lovable Ranger takes the edge off the tragedies. Though there is, of course, a lot of violence, it isn’t so detailed that it becomes too much for kids.

I Survived the Battle of D-Day, 1944 (I Survived #18), by Lauren Tarshis
11-year-old Paul has lost family and friends to the Nazis and can’t wait for the Allies to come liberate France. When he finds an injured American paratrooper, Victor, caught in a tree, Paul guides him to an old castle where he can hide. But to Paul’s surprise, the castle is already in use by the French Resistance, including his own mother! They are waiting for the signal that D-Day is about to happen, so they can strike against the Germans too, and Paul is now part of the team. The descriptions of Nazi cruelty and of the actual invasion are graphic, but there’s some light relief provided by Victor’s carrier pigeon, who refuses to fly off with messages but instead is on hand to save the day during a close call with the Nazis. It’s a gripping read that highlights the work of the ordinary people who made up the French Resistance, and there’s a lot of back-matter at the end so curious kids can learn more.

A Time For War, by M. Zachary Sherman
Michael Donovan is one of about 13,000 paratroopers being dropped into France on D Day to clear the Germans from the roads and towns around the beaches of Normandy. His plane is hit by anti-aircraft fire, throwing the planned jumps off target. Donovan finds himself alone in the dark country side with no weapons, terrified out of his mind. He finds other scattered paratroopers, and together they set out to tackle the Nazis. But can Donovan overcome his fear, and be the soldier his country needs him to be? It’s harrowing at times, and Donovan loses a good friend, but it’s inspiring as well. Interspersed with the narrative are illustrated pages of information that will please kids who love facts and details.

Dee Carpenter lied about his age to enlist in the army as a foot soldier, and he’s hiding another truth—he was born in Germany. Now he’s about to be tossed onto Omaha Beach. Samira is an Algerian girl who has joined forces with the French Resistance to sabotage the German Army. James is a terrified paratrooper dropped in the middle of the night, doing his best to complete his mission. And on the beach, Henry, an African-American medic, puts himself in mortal peril time after time to save the lives of wounded soldiers. Their stories are told separately, but they have points of connection, enriching each other. No punches are pulled in describing the horrors of what happened on Omaha Beach, but the poignant bravery of the central characters, and their compelling stories, makes this heartwarming as well as tear-jerking.

Interspersed with the narrative are sections focusing on specific topics, like the roles of women and African-Americans.
