Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 11: 5 Reasons We’re Excited for Double Down
Middle grade readers will be buzzing from more than just the Halloween sugar rush on Nov. 1, which marks the release date Double Down, the 11th book in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Beloved underdog Greg Heffley is back and just as oblivious as ever in the latest installment in which his parents want him to find something other than video games that he’s good at and actually enjoys.

As Kinney told Publishers Weekly in March, “the theme … is exceptionalism. Greg’s always thought he was special in some way, despite lacking any evidence to support that notion. In the 11th book, Greg sets out to discover what makes him unique in order to justify the grand vision he has of himself.”

1) Lights, camera, action! After finding an old video camera in the basement, Greg thinks maybe filmmaking could be his undiscovered talent and decides to make a scary movie with his best friend, Rowley. Of course, Greg doesn’t just have his sights set on finding a new hobby—he wants to become rich and famous in the process. We love Greg’s pen-to-paper doodles, so we’re excited to see what he can do with a new medium.
2) Everyone makes mistakes. Knowing Greg, the movie making won’t be as simple as he’s assuming—and that’ll be half the fun in reading about it. The book’s cover offers us a sneak peek at Greg’s potential downfalls, showing the middle-schooler teetering on a staircase, wearing an oversized (and overflowing) backpack.
3) It’s more fun than watching bullet journaling videos on YouTube. We can’t get enough of Greg’s illustrated journaling, and Double Down certainly doesn’t disappoint in that arena as we get to see scenes from school, Greg’s home, and, of course, his vivid imagination—like when he imagines all of his dead relatives watching him when he picks his nose.

4) The return of the living dead Cheese? Kinney seems to be giving readers a hefty hint about his latest book on the cover—the title is spelled out in big yellow letters that resemble Swiss cheese. Could this mean the return of the Cheese? As every Diary of a Wimpy Kid fan remembers, the Cheese Touch is the equivalent of cooties in Greg’s world. It originated with a piece of moldy cheese found on the basketball court. Someone touched the Cheese, and thus the Cheese Touch was born. But Rowley already ate the Cheese, ending the Cheese Touch forever—right??? Perhaps the resurrection of the Cheese is the basis for Greg’s scary movie!
