Exploring Liar’s Island and the World of Pathfinder

What do you get when you pair a con man with a magical talking sword? You get Liar’s Island, the newest Pathfinder Tales novel from Hugo Award winning author Tim Pratt.
I’d never experienced the world of the Pathfinder role playing game until a friend convinced me to try it—but exploring the world of Pathfinder is not a quest to be undertaken without adequate preparation. I decided that the best place to learn hwas at San Diego Comic Con, and in 2013 I spent several hours there immersed in a beginner’s game. I wasn’t the only newbie there, but I was the only one with zero RPG experience. As I was playing a strong female warrior who liked to battle, I took every opportunity to try to convince my fellow party members to wage war—with the innkeeper, at the bar, with the local priest (the monsters we were hunting were hiding in the church). It was a blast. I discovered that Pathfinder is an awesome game with limitless possibilities.

I also learned that, even if you aren’t playing, it’s fun to sit back and watch the action unfold—or, in the case of the Pathfinder Tales novel series, read about adventures in this rich fantasy world. In fact, if you have been shying away from RPGs because of concerns over the time commitments they require, the Pathfinder Tales are the perfect solution, and Liar’s Island is the perfect introduction—the book will appeal to both franchise fans and fantasy-lovers in general.
Rodrick, a classy and dashing knave, embarks on a quest with his faithful companion, a talking sword named Hrym. Hrym likes to sleep on piles of gold. Rodrick loves to acquire gold. Together they’re a legendary team…at least in their own minds. Rodrick is well aware that many men desire Hrym’s magic; while he values his own wits, he knows Hrym is the real wild card. It (he?) is special, and can also be very dangerous. When the duo is summoned to Jalmeray by a powerful king, Rodrick suspects an ulterior motive at work. Along the way, the duo gets distracted by nefarious plots, intriguing women, and treasure (where there’s treasure, you’ll find Rodrick and Hrym).
Pratt’s rollicking adventure is a classic quest narrative only enhanced by occurring within the fully fleshed-out, pre-existing Pathfinder world. But you don’t have to worry if you’ve never played—he gives you plenty of background along with his mythology, and makes it fun to read to easy to follow.
Looking for more Pathfinder goodness? Pratt has another tale featuring Rodrick and Hrym—Liar’s Blade. And with scores of books in the Pathfinder Tales universe (many of them newly rereleased by Tor Books), there are plenty of adventures to be had. Once you’re ready to level up, you can even move on to the Pathfinder Campaign Setting books, a great way for readers and players alike to immerse immerse themselves in a new world.
