From Jimmy Fallon, a Hilarious New Book: Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada

Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada is the host/actor/comedian/musician’s second book for kids—the first was Snowball Fight, published in 2005, about children enjoying a day off from school by playing in the snow. But it’s his first since becoming a father to daughters Winnie Rose, born July 2013, and Frances Cole, born December 2014. Naturally, Winnie’s first word was “Mama” (that would be Fallon’s wife, Nancy Juvonen Fallon), but there’s still a chance for Frances!
This second book is a simple enough story: barnyard animals are introduced one father-child pair at a time on opposite pages—father cow on the left, baby cow on the right, followed by sheep, ducks, bees, dogs, rabbits, cats, mice, donkeys, pigs, frogs, roosters, and horses. Each dad encouragingly (or angrily/worriedly/excitedly) shouts to his offspring, “Dada!” in hopes that his parental moniker might be the little one’s first word. Of course, the babies’ response is one more typical to each of their species. ”Moo,” says the wide-eyed calf. “Squeak,” says the little gray mouse. “Oink,” says a blissfully unaware piglet. While parents will enjoy the humor of the book, their little one will learn about animals and the sounds they make.
Illustrator Miguel Ordoñez’s brilliant drawings look like cutout shapes pasted on a simple nature background, which will be fun for older children who can pick out the cats’ triangle ears, the bees’ oval wings, and the horses’ rectangle bodies. And individual speech bubbles above each animal’s head give Mom or Dad an opportunity to try out their best animal voices (don’t forget to make the baby voices higher pitched!).
Available as a board book, NOOK book, or hardback, this fun read-aloud book has a sweet ending, with all of the baby animals coming together (“Now everybody get in line, let’s say it together one more time…”) to make their papas proud by saying, “Dada!” Except for that silly duckling, who is totally doing his own thing.
