Get to Know a YA Author: Rin Chupeco

Welcome to our newest feature on B&N Teen Blog, Get to Know a YA Author, in which we pose the same questions to different YA authors so readers can get to learn a little more about them, what they write, what they read, and what they love! Today’s interview stars none other than Rin Chupeco, who’s been rocking the YA fantasy world for years now, including with her newest release, The Never Tilting World. So come get to know Rin, the book, and more!
Rin has written obscure manuals for complicated computer programs, talked people out of their money at event shows, and done many other terrible things. She now writes about ghosts and fantastic worlds but is still sometimes mistaken for a revenant. She is the author of The Girl from the Well, its sequel, The Suffering, the Bone Witch trilogy, and, most recently, The Never Tilting World and Wicked As You Wish.
Describe your new release in 5 words.
Goddesses fight a broken world.
This is a YA book blog, so tell us 3 YAs you recommend!
I’m excited for Scavenge the Stars, and I live for Tara Sim’s Count of Monte Cristo retelling, easily one of my favorite themes. I’m also looking forward to Ava Morgyn’s Resurrection Girls, a gothic spooky suspenseful book perfect for October! And then there’s A Kingdom for a Stage, the sequel to Heidi Heilig’s For A Muse Of Fire. Because necromancy?? Summoning souls into flying machines?? How cool does that sound??
Ships in 1-2 days.
What do you do when you’re not reading or writing?
I’m always either reading or writing. I’ve been on a tight writing schedule since forever, with two books and two anthologies out this year and two more books next year! And with raising two kids with my husband, I’m afraid I don’t have time for much for leisure beyond the occasional food treat (often a working lunch, to boot!)
What’s your dream book tour city/stop?
Would a Paris stop be asking for too much? Although I am very likely to just park myself down somewhere and stuff cheese into my mouth. I’m not even as interested in the Eiffel Tower at this point. It’s nice, I guess, but…cheese, you know?
If you got to retell any story as a YA novel, what would it be?
I would very much like the chance to write Namor the Submariner as an arrogant, self-important teen who also happens to be the prince of Atlantis, fighting against everyone trying to claim his kingdom and flipping the bird to every other Marvel superhero within sight, friendly or otherwise.
What’s your favorite way to reward yourself for publishing a book?
Writing another one! I think it’s reached the point where it doesn’t feel right if I’m not up to my elbows in a draft. But when time does finally permit, or when I do impose a couple of hours of strict rest, I’ll be either with my Nintendo Switch or playing mmorpgs on Steam.
What are you working on now?
The sequels to both The Never Tilting World and Wicked As You Wish (out March 2020) at the same time. It’s fun for my brain because switching between manuscripts helps with creativity, but it’s also not very fun for the rest of me.
The Never Tilting World is available now and Wicked As You Wish is available for preorder.
