How Do I Talk to My Kids About Race?

How Do I Talk to My Kids About Race?

There are so many reasons why it’s important to talk about race and racism with kids at a young age. Not only does it increase self-awareness, but it also helps raise children who are more accepting and welcoming to people of different races and backgrounds. So, we’ve compiled some of our favorite books to help jumpstart these discussions as well as a few resources to talk with your kids about how they can be antiracist and stand up to injustices.

Must-Read Books by Ibram X. Kendi

One of the leading experts on how to talk about racism and understanding its roots is Ibram X. Kendi. With his new parenting book out, How to Raise an Antiracist, along with his brand-new picture book, Goodnight Racism, he’s produced some excellent resources for parents to start conversations about anti-racism. He’s also written Antiracist Baby which is out as both a board book and a picture book, as well as having partnered with Jason Reynolds to produce Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix of the National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning for both kids and teens. With such a wide variety of books for all ages, these are great options to use as a launching platform in family discussions about racism and fighting back against it.
