Huntley Fitzpatrick’s The Boy Most Likely To Will Make You Swoon and Ugly Cry
Summer is that beautiful, hopeful, inspiring time in between school years that seems both limitless and all too fleeting, and young adult author Huntley Fitzpatrick captures the magic that transpires in those three months brilliantly. If you haven’t read her first two books—My Life Next Door and What I Thought Was True—and you’re a fan of Jenny Han and Sarah Dessen (or just summer romance and awesome books in general), then get to the bookstore ASAP to snap these up. Fitzpatrick’s latest, The Boy Most Likely To, a companion novel to her debut, tells the story of Tim Mason and Alice Garrett, who had notable supporting roles in Samantha and Jase’s love story in My Life Next Door.
Tim’s “Most Likely To”s wouldn’t have made it into any yearbook. What I Thought Was True, by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick’s second novel is about a summer romance between a boy and girl on a Nantucket-esque island, which may sound like it has the makings of a light and fluffy contemporary YA. But with its realistic portrayals of sex and relationships, there’s just so much more to What I Thought Was True. Gwen Castle comes from a blue-collar family who caters to the rich clientele who frequent the island in the summer. And Gwen fears she’ll never escape the island, her working-class legacy, or her past mistakes. To make matters worse, her Biggest Mistake Ever, rich kid Cassidy Somers, is working as a yard boy on the island this summer, which means Gwen and Cass will be seeing a lot of each other whether she likes it or not. But as Gwen really gets to know Cass, sparks fly, and the two will have to question everything they thought was true about themselves and each other in this coming-of-age romance.

The Garretts are making room for one more (well, two more, since Mrs. Garrett has a baby on the way) in their crazy, hectic home—Jase’s BFF, Tim Mason, is moving into the apartment above the garage, since Tim’s parents and his school both gave him the boot. Tim knows he’s disappointed a lot of people, but he’s sober and looking to get his life on track. Then there’s 19-year-old Alice Garrett, Tim’s dream girl, who seems tough as nails on the outside but is actually deeply sensitive and vulnerable. Before the two can find out if there’s really something between them, a mistake from Tim’s past comes crashing back into his life. Told from Tim and Alice’s alternating first-person perspectives, The Boy Most Likely To is a compelling story about trying, failing spectacularly, and yet still trying again.
