6 Reasons I’ve Reread Anne of Green Gables a Dozen Times

Anne of Green Gables is one of those tried and true books I seem to turn to every year when the weather gets chilly, like a much-loved oversized cozy sweater. I must have read this classic almost a dozen times at this point, and with each reading I close the book feeling soothed and comforted, and like somehow everything is going to be okay. Even though L.M. Montgomery wrote this book over a century ago, its strong values of love and family still ring true today. There are so many reasons to tout this endearing book about my favorite red-headed, Canadian orphan, but here are the top six of them—some which can be best summed up in Anne’s own words.

Location, Location, Location!
How magical does Prince Edward Island and Green Gables seem to a child? The descriptions of The Lake of Shining Waters and The White Way of Delight totally enraptured my young imagination. I have always wanted to jump right into the pages, and lucky enough for any other die-hard fans there is actually an Anne of Green Gables Museum you can visit and see where L.M. Montgomery was inspired to write this beloved series!

Girl Power!
Mathew and Marilla had originally requested a boy orphan to help around the farm with the chores, so were none too pleased when Anne showed up that day at the station instead. But both were quickly won over by this delightful girl, and soon couldn’t imagine life without her. One point for the ladies!

Glass Half Full
One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.” Anne is definitely someone who always chooses to see the rosy side of life. An orphan with a tough childhood, Anne still manages to see the beauty in every experience thrown her way. Why not choose happiness?

The Fashion!
I can’t even tell you how much I wanted a dress with puffed sleeves after reading this book as a child. Though Marilla may have accused Anne of being a vain little girl, what woman doesn’t understand the power of a beautiful dress to lift your mood? As Anne says: “It is ever so much easier to be good if your clothes are fashionable.” I also loved when Anne took her plain old Sunday school hat and covered it in fresh flowers she picked on her walk to the church; she was truly one of the original DIY fashionistas!

Bosom Friendships
One of Anne’s ultimate wishes in life was to have a “bosom friend” forever and ever. Anne found this friendship in Diana Barry, who upon meeting for the first time, she made swear an oath while clasping hands that they would be BFFs forever. My childhood best friends and I had a friendship necklace, but this sounds way more fun.

Power of Imagination
I’ve always had a superstition that if I imagine something good will happen then I’ll jinx it. But for Anne, imagining something wonderful is more than half of the fun. And she’s right! Why risk being disappointed twice? Besides, “It’s delightful when your imaginations come true, isn’t it?” Why yes Anne, it is!
