Read the First Chapter of Lost Gods, a New Epic Fantasy Inspired by African Legends

Writers of all cultures and colors have been writing science fiction and fantasy since the beginning, but recently, these kinds of books have been getting more attention from mainstream U.S. publishers and readers—and that’s a boon to anyone looking for books that don’t just mine the same old familiar tropes again and again.
Next year, Angry Robot books is publishing a debut epic fantasy that is poised to do something different. Lost Gods by Micah Yongo is a fantasy novel inspired by African Legens, telling the story of a young man who has trained as an assassin since birth—only to find himself being hunted by his fellow students—people he though of as his brothers and sisters. Neythan is one of five young warriors trained and raised together by a mysterious brotherhood of assassins known as the Shedaím. Framed for the murder of his closest friend, he pursues the person who ruined his life, and along the way finds out the darkest secrets of the Shedaim and a war that threatens to envelop his people.
Lost Gods will be published in April 2018, but we’re pleased to share the full cover (with art by Larry Rostant) and the first chapter with you today.

“Look,” Josef whispered. “There.”
Neythan looked to where he pointed. The camp was less than a mile away. He could see the evening fires winking through the trees of the forested valley beneath them like light through a basket.
“I see it,” Neythan said.
“Good. Good… I’ll circle round for a way down. You stay here. Patience is the way.”
“Patience is the way.”
Neythan watched Josef go, the mist rolling up ghost-like from the basin below. It was still warm, quiet but for the croaking of insects and the murmur of the stream. A night like any other, save that he was to kill a man. The price of Brotherhood.
