Read It Again, Mom!: 6 Fun Picture Books You (and Your Kids) Will Love

The other night, my middle son made me laugh so hard my cheeks hurt. He was pretending his stuffed rabbit was snoring so loudly that he couldn’t fall asleep. My son would close his eyes and settle down on his pillow, and then suddenly, the “rabbit” would snore causing my son to jump up. It was hilarious, so I laughed and laughed. Which made him start laughing, too. It took forever to get him to fall asleep after that, but we both went to bed smiling.
Having fun with my kids is the best part of being a parent. Mother’s Day is here, a time when we celebrate having these cute munchkins in our lives and pay tribute to our own moms. Raising kids has its challenging moments (especially those mornings everyone sleeps late and you can’t find their shoes or when homework time rolls around and you’re faced with 2nd grade math) but the good far outweighs the not-so-good (seriously, I showed my oldest how I add three digit numbers, and he looked at me like I’m from another planet—“Here, Mom, just let me do it.”).
There are so many picture books to read together that will bring fun to your day. Whether you like silly or sweet, here are a few that are sure to make for many great memories and will be asked to be read over and over.
The Going to Bed Book, by Sandra Boynton
An all-time favorite at our house, The Going to Bed Book is chock-full of animals in a boat getting ready for bed. They stretch, they bathe, they brush their teeth—all the things kids can relate to in their own bedtime routines but with great illustration and rhyme. At the end, with the moon high in the sky, the boat rocks them to sleep (we always rock along with this part), bringing a satisfying end to the day.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle
Who doesn’t love this book? The journey of the caterpillar from an egg to a butterfly is a classic for good reason. Children love watching the caterpillar eat his way through the book, from strawberries on Thursday to chocolate cake, salami, and Swiss cheese, among other fine delicacies, on Saturday. Our favorite part of the book is at the end when he emerges as a beautiful butterfly, and we always flap the book like he has wings as he soars into the sky.

Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses, by Kimberly & James Dean
Pete the Cat is a popular guy around here, and one of our favorites is the story of his magic sunglasses. Pete is having a bad day until he receives some awesome magic sunglasses from Grumpy Toad. Things turn around after that, and he’s able to cheer up Turtle, Squirrel, and Alligator, too. Eventually, though, Pete realizes it’s ultimately up to him to create his own good day. This is super fun to read and a smart message to remember.

I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean, by Kevin Sherry
A giant squid is bigger than a lot of things: shrimp, clams, sharks. But there is one thing in the ocean that a giant squid, the star of this book, is not bigger than, and he will soon find out what it is. Fun for kids to read along and see all the different types and sizes of sea creatures, I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean is a bright, colorful book sure to please.

Tickle Monster, by Josie Bissett
Be prepared for lots of giggles and running around while reading this rhyming book. As the name implies, Tickle Monster is all about tickling: toes, tum tums, and underarm pitties. The monster is really an alien from Planet Tickle who loves to make you laugh. You can even buy the Tickle Monster Laughter Kit which includes the book and big blue Magical Tickle Monster Mitts. Kids will be on pins and needles waiting to see when you’re going to tickle next.

On the Night You Were Born, by Nancy Tillman
This love letter of a book is perfect to read to your children, especially on Mother’s Day, as you remember the day you became a mom. Dancing polar bears, a smiling moon, and trumpets from heaven all celebrate the birth of your baby, “the one and only ever you.” Beautiful illustrations and lyrical prose set this book apart as a lovely way to remind a child how special he is, and, really, what’s more fun than that?
What are some of your favorite and fun picture books?
