Disney’s Descendants Series Continues to Enchant with Rise of the Isle of the Lost
When Disney released Snow White, its first animated feature film in 1937, no one could have imagined that the Evil Queen’s teenage daughter and a posse of other famed Disney villains’ offspring would be starring in their own amazing tales 80 years later. Thankfully for all of us, dreams really do come true, as Melissa de la Cruz’s Descendants series continues with the third book, which hits shelves May 23. And for those wondering, Rise of the Isle of the Lost is mandatory reading for fans excited to watch Disney Channel’s Descendants 2, set to premiere in July.
For those not up on their Descendants lore, here’s the quick scoop: Twenty years ago, after all of the Disney good guys and gals got their happily ever afters and it seemed like most of the villains were gone for good, it turns out that the iconic Disney villains and their minions were banished by King Beast of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost, which is surrounded by an impenetrable dome. And astonishingly enough, these baddies actually had kids who are now teens. The series features lots of the offspring from Auradon (land of the good guys) and the Isle of the Lost, but it primarily focuses on Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Evie, daughter of Evil Queen; Jay, son of Jafar; and Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil, who may not be as rotten to the core as their baddie parents.

The series is a multiplatform entity for Disney, with the first book, The Isle of the Lost, acting as a prequel to the Disney Channel original movie Descendants; the second book, Return to the Isle of the Lost, picking up where the first movie left off with the fierce foursome now living reformed lives in Auradon; and now the brand-new third book, Rise of the Isle of the Lost, which is a must-read before watching this summer’s Descendants 2. The new movie will begin where the action of this third book ends.
And speaking of action, the drama in Rise of the Isle of the Lost is perfect for those reading it during a beach vacay—or just while dreaming of one—as the story centers on the sea and the most powerful magical artifact the deep blue has ever known: King Triton’s powerful trident. Someone accidentally lost the treasured trident, and it’s now on the wrong side of the invisible dome separating Auradon from the Isle of the Lost. Now it’s up to Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos to track down the magical object before it fall into the hands of Uma, daughter of Ursula, and her villainous pirate crew.
Author de la Cruz does a fantastic job, per usual, of drawing us into this enchanting world and creating multidimensional characters that readers can really root for. Mal is coming into her own in Auradon, still dating King Ben and committed to a life of doing good, while still maintaining the crafty mind and wicked style she maintained on the Isle. Something she left behind on the island, though, is the new enemy readers meet in this third volume—her childhood best friend, Uma, with whom she had a falling out before leaving for Auradon.
Can the four friends triumph over evil once again and save Auradon from the brewing storm? And is there hope for more villainous offspring from the Isle being capable of more than their parents’ wicked ways?
