#RocktheDrop With These 5 Books For Celebrate Teen Lit Day
While we celebrate YA every day, the official party is tomorrow—Thursday, April 16, Celebrate Teen Lit Day. One hugely fun event is Readergirlz’ Rock the Drop, which is a treasure hunt, a bookshelf purge, and a tweeting extravaganza all in one (#rockthedrop). Here’s how to get involved:
1. Print out a bookmark from Readergirlz
2. Leave a book you’re ready to part with in a public place—park bench, train seat, playground, restaurant counter
3. Post about it (pic optional)
4. Feel good.
You can also go hunting for free books of your own (that hashtag above can help you pinpoint locations)—authors like Sarah Dessen, Matthew Quick, Becca Fitzpatrick, and many more have dropped books around their hometowns in past years. I’ll surely be scattering books around my Brooklyn neighborhood—and if I were planning the perfect drop, here are five novels I’d leave in very specific places:

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, by Jennifer E. Smith
Hadley and Oliver, both headed to London for family events they’re dreading, spend one night flying over the ocean and falling in love. If you’re anywhere near an airport or a plane on Thursday, take this novel with you and leave it at a gate or in a seat pocket—whoever finds it will think it’s kismet.
Amity, by Micol Ostow
Amityville, New York, where the inspirational “house of horrors” for this book is located, would be a very apt place to drop—bonus points for leaving Ostow’s terrifying novel along Ocean Avenue—but this one will also make a statement if left in front of any old neighborhood’s resident creepy house.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
If you’re in Indiana, pick this book to drop, please! Finch and Violet, both suffering inside, find themselves through getting to know each other while doing a geography project. The two go to quiet-but-amazing spots all over the state, starting at Hoosier Hill, the highest point in Indiana. Other good drop locations for this one: on a backyard roller coaster (the setting where Violet and Finch first kiss) or atop the Purina Tower. Swoon.
Subway Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin
With its throwback 1980s graffiti cover and a bittersweet love story that time travels through the subway tunnels of NYC, this one is perfect for leaving on an orange bench on the F train in the morning—or on any public transit system around the world.
Hold Me Closer: The Tiny Cooper Story, by David Levithan
The raucous, bighearted musical introduced in Levithan and John Green’s Will Grayson, Will Grayson comes to life in this full-scale script. Drop the glittering cover near a local theater or on Broadway—Tiny Cooper will feel right at home.
