Seraphina, Shadow Scale, and the Dragons of Childhood

Seraphina, Shadow Scale, and the Dragons of Childhood

seraphinaThere were many dragons in my childhood. The old man in Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like, who comes to town leaning on a stick, claiming to be a dragon who can save the city from the coming invasion (his bright leap into glittering fire, after being laughed at by everyone but a poor boy, was revelatory: we are more than we seem from the outside.) Smaug from The Hobbit, stretched out lazy as a cat on the bones and gold of Lonely Mountain (the verbal sparring between Bilbo and Smaug is so much more terrifying than Gollum’s riddles). The dragons of A Wizard of Earthsea, both guiltless beasts and trickster adversaries (Sparrowhawk is at his most human when clashing wits with creatures whose powers dwarf his small arrogance). Dragons are at the seam of my adolescence and adulthood.
