The Artemis Fowl Movie Trailer Is Here! Get Excited!

There’s a trailer for the new Artemis Fowl movie, and my friends, it looks amazing. I’m screaming in delight—and you should be, too.
Artemis Fowl follows—well—Artemis Fowl, a 12-year-old genius with absent parents, a bodyguard named Butler, and a strong desire to catch a fairy. When he captures Captain Holly Short (of the LEPrecon division), it sets off a clash between him and the fairy universe, potentially plunging the Earth into an interspecies war if Artemis doesn’t release Holly. But Holly is more resourceful than Artemis reckoned—and Artemis is more clever than the entire fairy universe expected.
The first of this science fantasy series first hit shelves in 2001, making them nearly two decades old—but much like the Percy Jackson and Harry Potter series, they’ve earned a dedicated fandom and are constantly finding new readers. As a child, this was the only series besides Harry Potter that I would buy on release date, and watching new readers devour it never ceases to make me happy.
The trailer for the film—releasing this August—matches scenes from the first book almost exactly. There are many recognizable places and moments: the Haven City Express, Fowl Manor, the tree where Artemis and Holly meet, the moment Artemis gets The Book of the People, the Gnommish text on the screen. Even ignoring that the cast includes Dame Judi Dench as Commander Root—an absolutely ingenious casting decision—the film, from trailer alone, looks beautiful and true to the story.
After film adaptations like Percy Jackson, it can be easy to get nervous about a middle grade novel turning into a movie. But if this trailer is anything to go by, we can trust Disney and Kenneth Branagh to take this beloved book and bring it to the big screen.
Haven’t read it yet? Don’t worry: it’s easy to delve in! Here’s what you need to know about the Artemis Fowl universe and where to begin.
Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer
The Artemis Fowl series consists of eight books, and while we don’t know yet if Disney will continue adapting the series, the easiest place to begin is at the start. The first Artemis Fowl book is the one that the movie is based on and can be read as a standalone for those preparing for the film, but trust me: you’ll want to keep going. Plus: the series was re-released with brand new covers earlier this year, meaning that old fans can collect them again while new fans can get shiny new matching covers for their shelves.
Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel, by Eoin Colfer, Andrew Donkin, Paolo Lamanna and Giovanni Rigano
Reluctant readers and graphic novel aficionados don’t get to miss the fun! The first few books in the series earned graphic novel adaptations. Taking the descriptions of the incredible magic and technology in the series and bringing them to life, the Artemis Fowl graphic novels follow the books as closely as a graphic novel adaptation can. Find illustrations of the Mulch Diggums, Fowl Manor, Foaly, and the shimmer shield that hides fairy folk. Just don’t expect the visuals of the book to line up quite with the visuals of the trailer—especially when it comes to character design—as the graphic novel adaptations began before the film was cast.

The Artemis Fowl Files, by Eoin Colfer
This is more for the avid fans who have read all the books—or for the kid who devoured them in less than a week after watching the trailer. The Artemis Fowl Files is a tie-in book to the original series that’s half activity book, half short story collection. In addition to puzzles to solve, it features two original stories: one following Holly Short’s move from Traffic to Recon after joining the Fairy Police; and one (very funny) short story featuring Mulch, Butler, and Artemis. It’s the book that even die-hard fans of the series may miss, but is worth picking up if you become as obsessed as I did as a child.
