The Geronimo and Thea Stilton Series: Mouse Tales Worth Nabbing
For someone who doesn’t actively seek out adventure, Geronimo Stilton seems attracted to it the way he might also be drawn to a finely aged Gouda—and it’s a good thing for us, or else we wouldn’t have his wonderful stories to read.
If your young reader hasn’t discovered Geronimo Stilton yet, they are missing out on a thrilling world of chapter books. Vibrant cartoon illustrations, labeled drawings and maps, and fun fonts of various sizes and colors sprinkled throughout make these stories come alive.
The original series chronicles the adventures of Geronimo Stilton, editor of New Mouse City’s newspaper, The Rodent’s Gazette. Stilton makes it clear he’d rather be sitting down to enjoy a nice cheddar melt at the Squeak & Chew than galavanting off to solve a mystery or save a fairy queen. Yet, time after time, he somehow gets dragged into another quest with his fun-seeking sister Thea, zany cousin Trap, beloved nephew Benjamin, and other family and friends.
Part of what makes these books so captivating is that Geronimo tells each tale himself, accenting each escapade with funny puns, similes and metaphors. The stories move along at a rapid pace, thanks to punchy sentences and lively action.
Also helpful: each story provides a lot of background on the main characters, as well as the places they visit and the things they encounter. The books are filled with drawings that identify key characters, labelled maps that give you a better perspective of where the story takes place, and informative, illustrated articles that give the reader more background about what’s happening.

Geronimo’s latest adventure is entitled The Enchanted Charms. Although it is the seventh book in the spinoff Kingdom of Fantasy series, The Enchanted Charms is still enjoyable even if you haven’t read the other books in the series first (and, thankfully, it also begins with a breakdown of the major characters and an introduction to the Kingdom of Fantasy to get you up to speed). The book follows Geronimo’s journey as he retrieves seven enchanted charms for the Queen of the Fairies before the evil Wizard of the Black Pearl can get to them.
The Kingdom of Fantasy books are also a great choice for reading aloud, as even kids who can’t read themselves yet will enjoy the artwork, puzzles and maps. Not only do the drawings grab your attention with their bold colors, but they also encourage children to engage with the story by, for example, asking them to solve little puzzles or read a map.
Geronimo’s dynamic sister Thea also has her own spinoff series, the latest of which is Thea Stilton and the Lost Letters—which is especially fun for young readers who may not yet have been bitten by the fantasy bug, but who enjoy a good detective story. This newest adventure follows the Thea and her sisters as they try to help a friend who has been barred from competing in a figure-skating championship after she is accused of theft.
As the mice piece together clues about who is to blame, children are invited to solve the mystery themselves. As an added educational bonus (although one that doesn’t feel overly educational) the book contains tidbits of Russian history and culture, explaining traditional dishes like borscht and landmarks like Saint Basil’s Cathedral.
If you pick up any one of these titles, you will recognize why Geronimo Stilton has become an international sensation since the first book was originally published in Italy in 2000. These feel-good books are as delightful as a double-scoop of Swiss Cheese Almond Fudge ice cream on a hot summer day!
