The Winner’s Crime Author Marie Rutkoski Talks Writing Trilogies, Power Plays, and What Comes Next

Marie RutkoskiMarie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse dropped last year to immediate fan-fare. While technically a fantasy novel, you won’t find any magic or dragons in this book. Instead, it’s all about fantastic characters in all their emotional complexity. Set in a world reminiscent of ancient Rome, it follows Kestrel and Arin, two people from very different cultures, as they struggle against a world defined by poisonous power imbalances. Kestrel is the daughter of a Valorian general and Arin one of the subjugated Herrani, slaves to the Valorians since their brutal overthrow. Their star-crossed love story forced readers to ask uncomfortable questions about the ethical choices a character makes and the steep prices we pay for the things we value. It was beautiful and haunting, and then Rutkoski followed it up earlier this year with an equally incredible sequel, The Winner’s Crime
So when I had the opportunity to sit down with her, I fangirled all over the place and went on a mission to discover some of her favorite recent YA reads and get those all-important TV recommendations. Thankfully, I pulled it together long enough to get in some questions about her approach to writing, upcoming trilogy ender The Winner’s Kiss, and what’s next.
