Some of the first stories we hear as children are nursery rhymes, and this has been true for generations. In fact, this traditional story dates back to the 18th century. Most of us grew up with at least some version of Mother Goose on our bookshelves, and could still recite half of these catchy poems by heart. They’re simple, fun, and perfect for reading aloud before bedtime, or any time for that matter. The theme of this sweet book is numbers and counting, and there are a surprising number of nursery rhymes that fit the bill. Although some haven’t aged quite as well as the others. For example: “As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives.” Perhaps that one could use some updating in the next edition!
Old MacDonald Had a Farm: Sing along With Me!, by Nosy Crow and Yu-hsuan Huang
This book is cool in a few ways! First, you get a free song download with purchase, so you and your young reader can sing along to your favorite story. Humpty Dumpty’s Nursery Rhymes, by Roberta Pagnoni
