The Voyage to Magical North’s Sequel The Journey to Dragon Island Takes Readers on a Magical Adventure
The Journey to Dragon Island continues the magnificent adventures that began in last year’s Voyage to Magical North in fine swashbuckling style. The legendary Captain Cassie O’Pia is sailing the brave ship Onion into seas where only the bravest venture, hoping to reach the legendary island of Apcaron. There, Brine, the young heroine of the first book, thinks they will find not just dragons (though she’d like the baby dragon who adopted her in the first book to find friends) but her own family, whom she can’t remember.
An infestation of giant spiders on board the Onion is the first sign of magical mayhem to come, but when the Onion arrives at Apcaron Island, the spiders seem like child’s play. Not only is the island home to many species of dinosaur, carnivorous vegetation, quicksand, and a menacing volcano, but the inhabitants are keeping dark secrets. The wizard in charge of the castle that floats above the island recognizes Brine, and is happy to welcome her home…but his secrets are the darkest of all. The castle is not only home to the few mages remaining; it is also home to children from the island’s village who have been stripped of their memories, just as Brine was.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg. The island and its people, along with the balance of magic in the whole world, are threatened by what’s happening in the castle. It will take a volcanic eruption, the rescue of a clutch of dragon eggs, a bit of advice from the morally dubious dead magician haunting the Onion, and lots of pluck, for Brine and her friends to save the day!

This is a great series for readers of nine or ten who want fun, page-turning fantasy adventure! It’s the best sort of twisty story, full of surprises, but with everything making sense in the end. Character development, and strong, loyal friendships are an integral part of the story, alongside delightful fantasy elements, like the baby dragon’s flying lessons.
If you have a young reader who loves pirates, dinosaurs, dragons, and magic, this is just the right book for them (though you’ll want to offer Voyage to Magical North first. It doesn’t have the dinosaurs, but it does have really scary penguins and an evil magician….). The various dangers are gripping without being too fiercely disturbing, and it all works out just fine in the end. It’s clear that the adventures of Brine and her companions on the Onion will continue, and I myself can’t wait to see where they go next!
