We’re Getting a New George R.R. Martin Book in 2015—But Not the One You Think
Oh George R.R. Martin, why do you torture us so? A few months back, there was much wailing and rending of garments as word leaked from the A Game of Thrones scribe’s publisher that the sixth book of A Song of Ice and Fire would not be released in 2015. Then a week later, it sounded like we may have reason to hope after all, as the publisher actually just said it isn’t on the schedule yet; undoubtedly the book will be rushed to the printer if Martin does deliver the manuscript this year. After all, if we look back to 2011, Martin officially confirmed the July publication of A Dance with Dragons in March. We’re still working with a minimum five-month window!

In the meantime, though, there’s great news to thaw the hearts of fans waiting icily for The Winds of Winter to blow in: we do have a new Thrones-related book to look forward to! This fall will see the also-long-awaited release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, three previously published novellas set 100 years before the start of the series, collected for the first time in a single volume.
At a time when the volatile Targaryen kings still control the Iron Throne, the stories follow the adventures of “Dunk and Egg”—Sir Duncan the Tall is an inexperienced young knight-for-hire, and his companion, known only by his diminutive nickname, is really Aegon Targaryen, future king of the realm. Originally published between 1998 and 2010, these three tales—The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight—reveal key details about the characters and conflicts that led up to the intrigues and assassinations that kick off A Game of Thrones.
Maybe you’re a die-hard member of the Brotherhood Without Banners (with the Beric Dondarrion fanfic to prove it), and you’ve already tracked down various scattered anthologies to read these stories? Never fear, because we’re also getting more than 160 original illustrations from Eisner Award-winning artist Gary Gianni (who created the glorious images for the 2014 ASoIAF wall calendar).
While we wait for the story to move forward, these shorter works are more than just a welcome distraction, but an essential part of an epic modern myth.
