What You Need to Know Before You Read Libba Bray’s New Diviners Novel, Lair of Dreams
The wait is over, ladies and gents: Lair of Dreams, the second novel in Libba Bray’s Diviners series, is here! Because I read The Diviners and loved it, and because I can never get enough of the 1920s, and because everything Libba Bray touches with her pen becomes pure, solid gold (FACT), I was stupidly excited to get my hands on this book. And since I don’t want anything to keep you from diving headfirst into this historical/paranormal YA genius, I’ve crafted a quick rundown on everything you need to know so you can read Lair of Dreams RIGHT NOW.

What happened before
In The Diviners, Evie O’Niell arrives in New York City with a secret: she has the mysterious abilities to read people’s histories by touching objects belonging to them. The problem, of course, is that life-of-the-party Evie is terrible at keeping secrets, and even worse at staying out of trouble. The other problem is there seems to be a supernatural serial killer on the loose in Manhattan, and Evie and her friends may be the only people capable of stopping him.
But as they chase down the creepiest, crawliest murderer the 1920s have ever seen, it becomes clear Evie’s not the only one with a secret power. In fact, there are lots of other people with supernatural abilities, called Diviners, and they’ve been around for quite a while. With the Diviners’ powers growing stronger and strange things happening more frequently, it might be time to for them to band together, if they want to have any chance of stopping the evil that lies ahead.
What’s happening now
After facing down a monster from beyond the grave, Evie has revealed her biggest secret to the entire world—or at least all of New York City. Now she’s got her own radio show, on which she reads objects for the world at large, while her friends (and smooch buddies) Sam and Jericho try to keep her uncle’s failing occult museum afloat. As if that’s not enough trouble, Harlem poet Memphis can’t seem to get his healing gift working consistently, and chorus girl Theta’s still hiding her past from everyone.
Meanwhile, a sleeping sickness is silently killing off people throughout the city, eating its victims up from the inside out. And with Follies pianist and would-be composer Henry walking through dreams every night, looking to reunite with the boy he loves, it won’t be long before something goes terribly, horribly wrong.
What to look forward to
There are so many reasons to love Lair of Dreams AT LEAST as much as The Diviners (if not more), but without being too spoiler-y, here are just a few of the wonderful things you can expect from Bray’s sequel:
