Witches This Way Come: 5 Picture Books All About Witches

Halloween is almost here—my favorite holiday of the year! Something about the fall weather, the pumpkin displays, the trick-or-treating, and the costumes (The boys can’t decide this year between being the Minecraft creeper or Robin or Batman or Darth Vader! So many awesome choices!) gets me every time. I distinctly remember sometime in the 1980s painting my face green, gluing on Lee Press-On Nails, and donning a witch’s outfit (that my mom sewed) for Halloween one year. Witches equal Halloween, no two ways about it! And we have some fun, not-so-spooky picture books all about witches that your kids will love.
The House That Witchy Built, by Dianne de Las Casas and Holly Stone-Barker
Set to the rhyme of “This is the House that Jack Built,” The House that Witchy Built is perfect reading for Halloween, complete with sound effects (creaking, meowing, rattling, and clapping!). With cats, ghosts, skeletons, pumpkins, and of course, a witch, kids will love hearing (and chanting along with) this fun book over and over!
Boo-La-La Witch Spa, by Samantha Berger and Isabel Roxas
Does a witch need relaxation? Clearly, yes! This book is all about a Witch Spa for witches who are tired out from Halloween. But this is no ordinary spa—this spa has candles that smell like toadstools and skunks, tea made from bat whiskers, and snail drool in a pool! Your kids will giggle through the entire story! And the witches will be all ready for next Halloween after this spa visit.

Happy Halloween Witch’s Cat!, by Harriet Muncaster
If you think your mom is a good witch, then should you dress in coordinating costumes for Halloween? Read along as a little girl and her mom search for the just-right costume—could it be a pumpkin or a skeleton or a pink ballerina? Kids will love seeing what she decides.
Word Wizard, by Cathryn Falwell
More about a wizard than a witch, but still with lots of magic, Word Wizard is all about a little girl who discovers her cereal spoon is actually a magical wand! It can rearrange words into new words (like “ocean” can become “canoe”). She uses her newfound magic to help a little lost boy navigate his way safely home. A fun book that will inspire your kids to try and “magically” rearrange words, too!

We’re Off to Find the Witch’s House, by Mr. Kreib and R.W. Alley
A group of costumed kids decide to find a witch’s house one Halloween. But they’re not afraid! (Or so they say…) This cute picture book will have kids asking to hear it again and again as the kids in the book pass a spooky owl, other costumed kids dressed up like Frankenstein, a ghost, and more seemingly creepy things! But what will happen once they actually make it to the witch’s house?
