About the Author

Kaoru Mori's previous series, Emma, about a maid and a gentleman in Victorian England, has been lauded by Library Journal and was named to the YALSA Great Graphic Novels list. A Bride's Story has only broadened her fan base in Japan and the U.S. with its elegant style and delicate story.

This third volume of Mori's beautifully-drawn and engaging historical manga breaks out of Karluk's hometown and follows the mysterious and slightly annoying Mr. Smith on a journey of errors and missteps. His character deepens by fathoms, and we are introduced to two new characters, the woman depicted on the cover (no, it's not Amir on a bad clothing day), and a smart-talking, well-connected guide. My only complaint is that I have to wait half a year for more about Amir and Karluk - a wait compounded now by also wanting to find out what happens next to Mr. Smith. There's a feeling in the series that Mori has stepped up her historical research, her illustration skill, and her writing. I enjoyed the Emma series, but nowhere near as much as I enjoy Otoyomegatari/Bride's Story. Kudos to Yen Press for bringing this in affordable hardcover to the English-speaking market.

I really love this series - the art is fantastic and it's easy to be drawn into the world of the Silk Road.
