In this Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestseller, there are no such things as little secrets…

Raised by preppers, survivalist and FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has a deep-rooted need for a safe place. Her getaway in the Cascade Foothills is her secret. But when skeletal remains are unearthed—those of a murdered man linked to a notorious heist—Mercy realizes she isn’t the only one with something to hide.

Thirty years ago, an armored-car robbery turned deadly. The mastermind was captured. Four conspirators vanished with a fortune. One of them, it appears, never made it out of the woods alive. For Mercy and her fiancé, Police Chief Truman Daly, their investigation opens old wounds in Eagle’s Nest that cut deeper than they imagined. Especially when a reckless tabloid reporter draws fresh blood. It’s clear to Mercy that somebody in this close-knit community is not who they seem to be.

Some are still shattered by the heist. Some still have reason to be afraid. But which one will kill again and again to hide three decades of secrets? To land this case, it’s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies.

A Merciful Fate – Kendra Elliot I received this advance reader copy of the book from Netgalley, in exchange for an objective review. A fabulous new book in the Mercy Fitzpatrick series. Mercy Kilpatrick & Truman Dalys’ lives had just settled down again, when rescued teen, Ollie, stumbles upon a shack deep in the woods with human remains in it, with the appearance of an old murder. As they await ID of the body, old money bags are found at the scene, and Mercy wonders if somehow Ollie has inadvertently discovered a clue in a long unsolved armored car robbery many years ago. One of the robbers had been caught and sentenced to prison, but the others had long escaped and were never seen again….till now. Meanwhile, two long time residents of Eagles Nest are dealing with issues of their own. Sandy Foster, owner of the local bed and breakfast, has had several episodes of vandalism to her property – the latest a broken window to a clients car, and school teacher Bree Ingram has founse several spray painted ‘x’s on her horses stalls and her truck. Neither woman has any idea as to who may be targeting them. As Mercy and Truman re-open a long gone cold case, they request help from the now retired agent who had once led the investigation. Meanwhile, Mercy visits the presumed ringleader of the robbery in prison, and comes back with more questions than answers. As the investigation ensues, a young reporter is killed…leading Mercy and Truman deeper into the past, and ultimately to the present, where nothing will ever be the same. I loved this book, and I absolutely love the Mercy Kilpatrick series. A great series for any mystery lover, with likeable characters, fast paced storytelling, and enough intrigue to keep you reading well into the night!!

Loved it! An outstanding fifth book in the FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick series by Ms. Elliot. A cold case is the next investigation for Mercy when human remains are found in an abandoned shack. Found with the body are empty cash bags from an armored car robbery that happened thirty years ago. Four of the five robbers escaped along with two million dollars. A guard was killed and the one robber who was shot, at the scene, has been in prison since that time. Do the remains belong to one of the robbers? This will be an involved and comprehensive mystery as little by little Mercy and her team work to uncover clues from so long ago. Meanwhile, Mercy’s fiancé, Police Chief Truman Daly of Eagle’s Nest, is investigating his own cases as two separate women in the town are the targets of vicious vandalism. Mercy begins to suspect that their cases may be connected, but that would mean that someone in their small community is hiding a criminal past. When Mercy questions the lone robber in prison, this brings more questions than answers. Ms. Elliot weaves her mysteries in such a way that you follow along…think that you may know what is going to happen…then are surprised to find out that you were wrong all along. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

In this fifth outing of the Mercy Kilpatrick series, Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick is pulled into an infamous bank robbery from thirty years ago. When a skeleton found in an abandoned cabin in the woods turn out to belong to one of the robbers, it is Mercy's job to see if she can finally solve the mystery of what happened to the rest of the gang and the money. Just as Mercy starts re-investigating the robbery with the help of the original FBI agent on the case, a young tabloid reporter shows up in Eagle’s Nest asking questions that are threatening long buried secrets. Who contacted her and brought her to Eagle's Nest. There also appears to be someone else around vandalizing property and making threats. Does it relate to the case or is it something else entirely? I enjoyed this latest outing in this series. It will appeal to so many with its mix of genres from Romantic Suspense, Mystery, Suspense, and/or thriller. Reader be warned, this series needs to be read in order. Each book builds on the character development and situations from the previous story. I love the characters in this series. Mercy is tough and stubborn as well as having a hard time opening up to others. She is a solitary person, except, Truman is changing her. Truman is the local sheriff and they have saved one another on countless occasions. I love how Mercy and Truman’s relationship is slowly developing. Mercy is learning to balance their relationship with her ingrained prepper beliefs. All of the secondary characters are important to this story development as well. They are becoming fleshed out and are important in helping Mercy learn to trust. The unsolved robbery is an interesting storyline that plays out well in the story. There were several twists, which was to be expected, that built suspense and had me on the edge of my seat. The final reveal of who was involved in both storylines surprised me, but in hindsight, it fit the story well. The story was fast paced and had me racing through this one in one day. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy mystery, romantic suspense, and police/enforcement stories. The publisher, Montlake Romance, generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Ollie is learning that there are rules, but some rules need to be broken. Mercy and Truman are trying to figure out what happened to the participants in a thirty year old robbery. Vandalism has hit their small town on top of everything else, and they aren't sure if it's connected to the robbery. Another amazing read by Kendra Elliot.. Intrigue, mystery, nailbiting excitement. Well worth 5 stars.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: Kelly NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 Another wonderful read by Ms. Elliot. I always enjoy a good suspense book that keeps me guessing. Just when I think I know what is going to happen I am lead down a different path. A Merciful Fate is heavier on the mystery suspense then the romance. I honestly think this might have been one of my favorite Mercy books. I really enjoyed the mystery, the emotions and the love between Mercy and Truman. I can’t wait to see what is next for Mercy and Truman. While I would love for them to finally have some downtime and live a nice boring life. But I want more Mercy books. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

I loved this book!! It's my favorite book in the Mercy Kilpatrick Series. It's even better than the last book, which I also loved. There were so many twists and turns. I never guessed who was going to be involved or the ending. I love Mercy as an FBI Agent, especially with her background. I definitely want Mercy and her bag of medical supplies next to me if I’m ever shot. Her and Truman make a perfect pair and I can’t wait for the wedding . I also love the addition of Ollie. When a skeleton is found in the woods with empty money bags, the FBI is called in to investigate. Mercy thinks it’s related to a armored truck robbery that happened about thirty years ago. Sandy and Bree are having vandalism occurring on their properties. A tabloid reporter shows up looking to write a story up about the skeleton and the robbery and starts questioning everyone. Eventually Mercy and Truman discover the truth about everything and all the secrets are finally revealed. I loved the story, characters and writing style. I absolutely loved the ending and finally learning the truth about everyone who was involved. So many secrets and people who aren’t who you thought they were. I enjoyed that the story wasn’t all about survivalist and preppers. I’m happy Mercy is on better terms with her family and hopefully her dad will come around. I definitely recommend the book and the previous ones in the series. I can’t wait to read the next one. I’m sure Truman and Mercy will have another crime to solve. Hopefully she refills those sponges made from crustacean shells. Thanks to NetGalley, Montlake Romance and the author, Kendra Elliot, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.

So very many layers to this story. Mercy is FBI, Truman is local Chief of Police...you wouldn't think they would work well together - ahhh, but here you would be wrong. They are engaged and by the very nature of their jobs they listen and offer ideas on each other's cases. Add to that a body found which is possibly linked to a federal crime of 30 yrs ago and you can see where they have to work together. This book takes in and uses the point-of-view of more than 4 different characters. It is very well done so that the reader had no doubts about whose POV is being used during any one scene. Good job, on a difficult task. My only draw back is some of the more gruesome bits. No horrific descriptions, but I don't really care for it when nasty things happen to the innocent and there are a few different such incidences in this book. The layers of the story were very well done, from one scene to the next you couldn't tell which crime pertained to which villains. Again, good job. I thought a few times that I had figured it all out...but for once I was wrong. I didn't have it figured out until the chapter in which the crime was solved. I like books that surprise me and Kendra managed to do that a couple of times. If you are looking for a cozy, bloodless, mellow mystery, this book may not be for you. However...if you are looking for a well written mystery with characters who are far from perfect, then this book should be on your reading list.

WOW! This latest installment in the Mercy Kilpatrick series will keep you guessing right up until the very end. Truman may have rubbed the rough edges off Mercy but she is still sharp as a tack. I was riveted from the first page until the last. I look forward to further mysteries with Mercy, Truman and the gang.

A Merciful Fate is Book 5 of the Mercy Kilpatrick series by Kendra Elliot. While every story so far in this series has been great and there is a bit of a backstory that continues along, I do think a person could easily jump in mid-series and not feel overly lost. Personally, I'm just finding the time to grab the first 2 books in the series and I've been following along just fine. I've enjoyed every story I have read by this author but I must say, this is absolutely one of the BEST yet! It kept me on pins and needles the entire time. The suspense was riveting and I was certainly thrown for more than a few loops. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I snuck in a chapter every chance I could get.

Another amazing book by Kendra Elliot! I fell in love with this series and I am so hooked I just couldn’t put this book down. Too bad pesky little things like work and responsibilities got in the way. I did not see the plot twist coming which just made me enjoy this book so much more. I can’t wait to read book number six of the Mercy Kilpatrick series. ***Received this ARC by NetGalley as an exchange for an honest review.

This is a twisting mystery, full of intrigue and secrets that are interwoven within a notorious cold-case. The action, tension, deception and twists will keep you glued to the page, and the character development is brilliant. Mercy is one of my all time favourite characters, her tenacity, intelligence, strength and vulnerabilities are realistic and you can not help but be drawn to her. I love how Truman continues to break down her barriers, and the quiet, reserved loyalty and intelligence of Ollie. The relationships between Mercy, Truman, Kallie and Ollie are heartwarming and I have loved watching them grow and develop throughout the series. This is a great story that once started you won’t be able to put it down until it’s finished.

Kendra Elliot is a must-read author! I eagerly anticipate each of her new books and novellas. The Mercy Kilpatrick series is a favorite since book one, and this one continues the excellence. I am particularly picky about characters that are strong, determined, but believable, and Elliot delivers, each and every time. When skeletal remains are found in the woods, FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick finds herself and her fiance, Police Chief Truman Daly, embroiled in a decades old mystery. Who was the mystery driver of the getaway car that escaped with millions of dollars in armored car money? Why did one of the robbers wind up dead in an abandoned cabin in the woods near Eagle's Nest? And will someone kill to protect a decades old deception? Fast paced and entertaining. I couldn't put it down!

Another suspenseful mystery set in the prepper world… This is the fifth book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series that can be read as a stand-alone. A young man takes a leisurely walk in the woods with his dog In the Pacific Northwest and happens upon an old cabin after his dog brings him a human bone and then leads him to where it was found, this cabin harbors the skeleton of a murdered man and empty money bags. A thirty-year-old cold case will reopen with the finding of this evidence. An armored car robbery had been committed by five men, a guard was murdered but not before he shot one of the burglars, the mastermind of the heist, who still remains in prison. Two million dollars and four men simply vanished with no leads until now and FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been assigned the case. When a tabloid reporter comes to town seeking information on the found bones, information supposedly kept from the public, and their possible connection to that past robbery, and is murdered Mercy knows the answer to the past lies close to home. While Mercy is preoccupied, her fiancé, Police Chief Truman Daly is working two cases of vandalism against women that differ in the details yet the victims became friends after moving to town years ago and they have unknown pasts. Coincidence? Most in law enforcement don’t believe in the concept. Are these cases related to each other? Could they relate to Mercy’s case? Truman and Mercy have learned that the prepper world hides many secrets, in this part of the country people live off the grid and disavow the government so anything can happen. Does anyone really know their neighbors? This was another suspenseful mystery that easily held my attention with a surprise twist at the ending. These characters are compelling and having followed the series there is much character growth that not just the main protagonists’ exhibit, with each experience that they go through they learn and become stronger individuals for realizing what is of true importance. An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley.

Reading A Merciful Fate is like coming home and slipping into my jimmy-jams, robe and slippers, turning on the fire and gathering up the dog, throw and glass of wine. This is absolutely not to imply the books in this, series, including A Merciful Fate are cozies. Au contraire, mes amies. This series has kept me on the edge of my couch and turning pages as quickly as possible. I still have not totally recovered from the last book A Merciful. Silence Of course these books can be read alone, Elliot does a good job of catching you up on the players. I might not have read of any cop/FBI with a background as unusual as Mercy Kilpartrick’s, (outside of the realm of fantasy). Mercy is a secret prepper-actually the smartest kind to be. She was raised by prepper/survivalist parents until she broke away. I’m gonna quote myself, “You can take the girl out of the family circle but you can’t take the prepper out of the girl.” So she still embraces parts of the philosophy. The always be prepared part, just to an unusual degree. She is an FBI agent in love with and engaged to the local police chief, Truman Daly. When Mercy finds herself proposing a wedding trip to Italy its wonderful to see that Mercy is no longer a half bubble off plumb, but just a smidgen. Can y’all tell I’m fascinated by Mercy? Okay now back to our regularly scheduled programming. Truman’s ward, Ollie, finds a skeletonized body in the woods. The body turns out to be a member of the Gamble-Helmet bank robbery gang which ended in one death, one arrest, four escapes and the money disappearing. The Gamble-Helmet crime became second only to the D.B.Cooper hijacking in myth and mystery in the Northwest. Thirty years is a long time for people to re-invent themselves so Mercy finds herself eyeing long time friends in a different way. She is just not eying the right people. Meanwhile, back in Eagle’s Nest, Truman is dealing with two, seemingly unconnected spates of vandalism. I would have to say the complex plot, and the fascinating characters are evenly matched in A Merciful Fate. It was especially lovely to see so much of sister Rose, her FBI partner Eddie Peterson and young hero Ollie. I know also that this sounded like a review of Mercy. But why not, there seems to be a competition between authors to make their cop/FBI agents as damaged as possible. Mercy fits into that category, but I think in just about the most interesting way. Elliot could have done a bit better research about retired FBI agents. They are fully able to carry concealed weapons. No concealed weapons permit needed. I still admire the way Elliot writes in such a respectful way about the prepper lifestyle. She makes it understandable, not a joke. Elliot also has a fine way with her occasional metaphors, “ ...but an experienced reporter would dip him in batter, deep fry him, and then eat him for dinner” Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

To land this case, it’s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies. My Thoughts When a skeleton is accidentally discovered in the woods outside Eagle's Nest it is determined to be a member of the group who committed a thirty-year-old armored-car robbery. Unfortunately for Mercy and Truman this discovery sets off a chain of events that neither one expected or of course were prepared for. Who is responsible for the successive fallout following the remains identification becomes the couples number 1 priority, especially when things turn deadly for Mercy once again. Mercy Kilpatrick is truly coming into her own as a sympathetic character to others rather than only thinking of her own self and her own needs as she has in the past. Although in this book there are different protocols in place the edgy and sometimes dark areas which are explored in the story still grab the reader as effortlessly as previous 4 books have done. For me there is a lot of growth in many areas for the main characters with room for more to come in future books. The mysteries surrounding the crime investigations were at times transparent to this reader as I managed to correctly interpret clues sooner than our intrepid FBI agent and her fellow Law Enforcement personnel. However, that being said there are still many ways for Mercy to still be a character I want more from in the future as she and Truman still have a wedding ceremony to come. [EArc from Netgalley]

An absorbing mystery about a 30 year old armored-car robbery. Mercy and her FBI team get the first big break about the age old mystery when a body is discovered turns out to be one of the robbers. As Mercy and the FBI are trying to uncover more about the heist, Truman and the Eagle's Nest police department are trying to figure out who is vandalizing two prominent women in the town's businesses. Are these two things completely unrelated or is there a thread tying them together. An enthralling read from start to finish in an engaging series.

Mercy Kilpatrick is back in action! The fifth novel of the series, A Merciful Fate, takes a new turn as a 30-year-old unsolved bank robbery is once again under investigation. Kendra Elliot shakes up the small town of Eagles Nest with surprises ranging from good to shocking. Two cases of vandalism and a skeleton discovered in an abandoned cabin set up the mysteries of this story. Throughout the story I had to reset what I assumed with each new fact presented. Not knowing whether the cases were related, and if they were, how, was what kept me reading long into the night. It was like the answers were within my grasp, but then something either diverted my attention or caused me to second-guess myself. I loved it! After five novels in this series, Mercy has finally made a place for herself in the place she grew up. Her relationship with her father is still rocky, but there's still time for mending. A wedding is in the horizon and Mercy and Truman are stronger than ever. I'm enjoying learning about the new addition to the cast, Ollie. His character has been like a breath of fresh air and I loved that he's played an essential role in both A Merciful Silence and A Merciful Fate after coming seemingly out of nowhere. Next in the series is A Merciful Promise. I can't wait to see what's next for the residents of Eagle's Nest. The series up to this point has been intriguing and the perfect balance of suspense and romance. *ARC provided in consideration for review*
