Overview

In this Wall Street Journal bestseller, a pair of ritual murders could expose Mercy Kilpatrick to something terrifying: her own past…

Raised off the grid by survivalists, Mercy Kilpatrick believed in no greater safeguard than the backwoods of Oregon. Unforgiven by her father for abandoning the fold for the FBI, Mercy still holds to her past convictions. They’re in her blood. They’re her secrets—as guarded as her private survival retreat hidden away in the foothills.

In a cabin near her hideaway, Mercy encounters a young girl whose grandmother is dying from multiple knife wounds. Hundreds of miles away, a body is discovered slashed to death in a similar way. The victims—a city judge and an old woman living in the woods—couldn’t be more different. With the help of police chief Truman Daly, Mercy must find the killer before the body count rises. Mercy knows that the past has an edge on her. So does her family. How can she keep her secrets now…when they’re the only things that can save her?

This is the third book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series and the best one so far. FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick is not only a dedicated agent, she is also a 'prepper', not a an anti-government person, but someone who believes that a catastrophe will occur someday and they need to be prepared. She was raised this way by her parents and even though she left home as a teenager, it is ingrained in her mind. She has a cabin deep in the woods where she goes every chance she gets where she has stockpiled food, ammunition, and other supplies. She is on her way to her cabin late one night, when a young girl runs out of the woods, covered in blood, asking her to help her grandmother. She has been stabbed in a ritual way and does not survive. Knowing this is not an FBI case, she calls Police Chief Truman Daly to the scene. It is the next day that they discover a judge, miles away in Portland has been killed the same way. What is the connection between the judge and an elderly woman known as a witch, complete with potions and spells and many ritual knives hidden behind the wall. Now it is an FBI case. The book is well written with a great plot. Even though this series is labelled romantic suspense, I find it is more suspense with a bit of romance. The young girl, Morrigan, and her mother Salome, are running from someone, but it is not until the very end of the book that we finally find out who is after them and why. The suspense builds and builds until the surprising, explosive ending. Of course Mercy is once again threatened and in some danger as she does her best to protect these citizens of Eagle's Nest. I love the character of Truman. He is steady strong, standing by Mercy in her personal dealings with her family and when she needs his support through her work. They are a great couple. I am glad to see their relationship move forward. This book can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend that you read them in order to find out the whole story of Mercy and her family.

I am fascinated with Mercy Kilpatrick. Each book she grows, she evaluates, her love deepens, her life expands and all with murder, mystery, suspense. On top of that there are twists and turns you don't see coming. Its like the Mercy Kilpatrick universe is expanding and I did not want it to end. I requested an arc and am so grateful to be able to receive. Thank you Montlake and Netgalley. I am riveted with this series and highly recommend.

A Merciful Secret is the third book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. Just like the other two, the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat until the bitter end. Kendra Elliot continues to write stories that draw you deep into the minds of the characters and really want to know why things are happening. Although I figured out who the killer was early on, I doubted myself until it got close to the end. There was a lot of information that made me think I could be wrong. The twists and turns kept coming. The series focuses on FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick and her growing relationship with Eagle’s Nest Police Chief Truman Daly. And of course, there’s always a mystery to be solved when Mercy is involved. This time, she stumbles upon a little girl looking for help on the road in the middle of the night. The little girl leads her to a cabin in the woods where an older lady, the little girl’s grandmother has been stabbed multiple times. The woman eventually dies in front of Mercy. Consequently, Mercy makes it a point to figure out who the murderer was although it isn’t technically her investigation. The investigation takes on a life of it’s on as it seems to be connected to the murder of a high-profile judge. From there, the body count begins to rise but the suspect list doesn’t. The little girl’s mother seems to be in the middle of everything but the FBI is having trouble finding her. Oddly enough, trouble also seems to find the mother too. That’s about all that I can say without giving too much away. A Merciful Secret was another well crafted mystery. The characters were well developed and I appreciated the fact that this was not a typical mystery. You get to see relationships develop during the course of the investigation which make you more invested in the main characters. Yet, there is still a lot about them that I would like to know. A Merciful Secret was very realistic and felt like it could really happen. I hope that there are more Mercy Kilpatrick novels to come. **Received a copy from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed the book.**

FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick is not only a dedicated agent, she is also a 'prepper' ... a person who believes a catastrophic disaster or emergency is likely to occur in the future and makes active preparations for it, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies. Raised off the grid by her survivalist parents, this way of living is something very normal for her. She has a cabin deep in the woods where she goes every chance she gets. It's in these woods where a young girl hails her and asks for help. Her grandmother needs help. She finds the girl's grandmother dying of multiple stab wounds. Calling her Police Chief Truman Daly, they discover that a judge, miles away. was also killed in the same way. What is the collection between the judge and an elderly woman known as a with, complete with potions and spells? This is the 3rd in a series of 4 books featuring Mercy Kilpatrick and Truman Daly. Although this one is okay as a stand alone, I highly recommend starting at the beginning. This has been a highly suspenseful series. The 4th book is due out June 2018. The book is well written with a great plot and many credible characters. Categorized as a Romantic Suspense, this is much more suspense than romance. The suspense builds and builds until the surprising, explosive ending. Many thanks to the author / Montlake Romance / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Romantic Suspense. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A Merciful Secret – Kendra Elliott I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this novel in exchange for an objective review Mercy Kilpatrick is an FBI special agent in rural Oregon. Raised in a very small town there, she remains close to her roots in her downtime, and is in the process of building a survivalist foothold deep in the mountains. As she’s leaving her mountain hideaway, she barely misses striking a child who comes dashing from the woods into the roadway, seeking help for her injured grandmother. Mercy finds a fatally injured older woman, who dies shortly after her arrival, despite her best efforts. Meanwhile, three hours away, a similar death occurs, and the pathologist makes the connection due to the similarity in wounds. But who would want an old woman and a nationally renowned Judge with no apparent ties to one another, dead? And why? So, begins Mercy’s next adventure. Despite being barred from the investigation due to her being a witness to a murder, Mercy inserts herself into all aspects of the case, with the help of fellow agent Ava, and boyfriend, chief of police Truman. As new clues are uncovered, and connections are made, yet another snowstorm is barreling in on Oregon, setting events in motion that will threaten all Mercy holds dear… Kendra Elliott is quickly becoming one of my favorite new authors – her books are suspenseful, difficult to put down reads, and yet easily read – this one took me only a few hours – the perfect beach read!

The poison of certain secrets… This is the third book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series that can be read as a stand-alone. Though Mercy Kilpatrick is an FBI Agent her prepper upbringing is an inherent part of who she is and it was her internal need to check on her survivalist cabin that placed her on a dark road in the mountains around Bend, Oregon late one night where a lone panicked young girl dashes onto the road and Mercy almost hits her with her vehicle. The girl seeks help for her grandmother and leads Mercy through the woods, what she finds she’ll never forget, someone slashed an old woman repeatedly with a knife and she’s barely alive. In the moments before an inevitable death the old woman and the agent bond, it’s now given that Mercy needs justice for this woman even though she is relegated to witness status. But who was this old woman? And where is the girl’s mother? Unknown to Mercy another death with a similar modus operandi has been discovered, in the city of Portland a well-known judge died from knife wounds, the slash patterns eerily similar to the old woman’s. What connects these two cases? Agent Mercy must solve the enigma of what an old woman who led a hermit’s life, who the locals called witch, and a judge with relatives in the area have in common. A secret long kept seeks the light of day, a secret that turned someone’s soul to darkness. With the help of Mercy’s significant other Police Chief Truman Daly and her FBI associates the past will come to light but the race is on to find the culprit, before there are more deaths, and the mother and child who vanished upon their reunion. This book had great intrigue and suspense, from the opening pages the reader is drawn in to murder, mystery and secrets. The background plot of the life of preppers was fascinating, they prepare for the worst and considering today’s reality perhaps they have it right. The main protagonists, who had united previously, deepen their relationship finding a greater sense of solidity, Mercy faces more from her past as she investigates this case. The reader is also given the point of view of the young girl’s mother which added a dramatic spin and enabled us to feel compassion for the misunderstood woman. The many twists to the complex plot will have you guessing to the end. An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley.

A Merciful Secret is Book Three of Kendra Elliot's Mercy Kilpatrick series. I'm fairly new to this author so this is the first book in this particular series I have read and even though there were references to past stories, I followed along just fine. I do however, look forward to going back and catching up with the first two. This story is light on the romance and heavier on the suspense but wowza did it ever pack a punch. Just when I thought I had it figured out, wham, the author hit me with a new twist. Great character development and a very intriguing plot kept me engaged from start to finish. Despite the romance taking a "back seat" I certainly felt the connection between Mercy and Truman and look forward to reading more about them in the future. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2 Again I find myself immersed in the world of Mercy Kilpatrick. In A Merciful Secret Mercy finds herself the first person on the scene of a vicious knife attack that turns into a murder investigation. But that is not the only murder that the small town of Eagle’s Nest has to deal with, one of the local resident’s father has also been killed up in the big city of Portland. The only connection between these two murders is that both are very similar in method. But neither Mercy or Truman were prepared for the wild ride that these two murders were going to take them on. When all the questions are answered someone's hopes and dream will go up in flame. Another wonderful book from Mrs. Elliot! I always love picking up a copy of her books. I really enjoyed seeing the connection between Mercy and Truman grow. These two are so perfect together and can work through anything as long as they are together! I can’t wait to see what is next in this series. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Kendra Elliott is one of my "go-to" authors for romantic suspense books. When I see her name on a new release I know I am going to get a first-rate gripping thriller which is well-written and maintains my interest throughout the story. A Merciful Secret which is book #3 in Kendra Elliott's Mercy Kilpatrick series is an excellent example of this author's fantastic writing skill set. This book has characters who are realistic and relatable to the reader. They have some character flaws, so not perfect unbelievable characters. In this book FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick once again must use her excellent thinking skills and brave and caring attitude to solve a case. Mercy's love interest, Eagle's Nest Police Chief Truman Daly stays true to character as well. He must use all his skills to help support Mercy in her endeavers. The author expertly describes her action scenes so that the reader feels involved personally in all the action. This is a fast-moving thriller which keeps the reader guessing until the end and doesn't let up so you keep turning the pages eagerly in anticipation of finding out who-done-it!

A MERCIFUL SECRET. by Kendra Elliott book 3 "Mercy Kilpatrick" Mercy at a new case, yard looks like a pile of junk, she looks again, he was prepared, but someone got by. Connection to the other two, all missing weapons, and in Eagles Nest. Coffee, and being recognized by family, but not spoken too, a town that knew everything that goes on, hadn't changed, Truman the sheriff works with her, and they uncover more than just murder, it is connected to Mercy's past. A deep twisted plot, that shows us more about Mercy. Readers will enjoy this story, and series, it grabs from the first page. Given ARC by Net Galley for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Mercy knows that the past has an edge on her. So does her family. How can she keep her secrets now…when they’re the only things that can save her? My Thoughts Once upon a time Mercy Kilpatrick's character was a very reserved loner type whose tendency to keep to herself was both lonely and also something she accepted simply because it was what it was. In this 3rd book while it is true that Mercy is still mending fences with her family, things have gotten much better for her in that area of her life and it seems in her relationships with her niece Kaylie and romantic interest police chief Truman Daly. What I especially liked the most was the fact that this story started with Mercy finding herself in the middle of a murder scene and as things unfold throughout the rest of the book the mystery angle was heavily relied upon as were the action and suspense with just enough romance to add a little extra for readers to enjoy on Mercy's behalf. The multiple twists were nicely intertwined as were the intensity and tension that ramped up this read to a level not quite reached for me in the previous two books. Mercy once again proves to be an adversary that is believable without being over-the-top as many heroines tend to become in this particular genre. She may be an awesome FBI agent but she is also just a human at the end of the day who feels pain and tiredness like all of us do. Fans of the series and new readers as well will find themselves enjoying the new nuggets from not only Mercy's past but from Truman's as well. Like others reading this series hopefully there will be more to come rather than it just being a trilogy as there is so much more to explore for these characters futures. [EArc from Netgalley]
