About the Author

Dolly Hills was born in Dillingham, Alaska and raised in Levelock, an isolated native village on barren tundra, located on the Kvichak River at Bristol Bay. Her ancestry is Yupik Eskimo. During summers, her family fished at set-net sites. This area is the nation's largest commercial sockeye salmon producing region in the world. Her family mainly lived off the land, fishing and hunting, and picking berries, with occasional treats from the small village store. She attended a one room school through sixth grade. Her family then moved to the more populated Kenai Peninsula, where she finished elementary school and graduated from Kenai High School. Dolly married her husband, Tom, in Soldotna and had two children and six grandchildren. She worked in retailing, banking, and fish canneries, but was employed as an office manager during most of her career. Dolly and Tom continue to reside on the Kenai Peninsula where she authored this book and enjoys the richness of life.
