Description: This is the only book on dermoscopy that actually has mastered the art of how to teach it properly so it makes sense to clinicians. What is seen dermatoscopically is clinically correlated with what is seen microscopically, making learning a more intuitive process, rather than memorizing a list of descriptive terms that are not intuitive. There are many detailed color dermatoscopic photographs of benign and malignant lesions, with important characteristics to note marked.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach the principles of dermoscopy to dermatologists who have no experience using a dermatoscope to diagnosis lesions, with the goal of teaching recognition of benign versus malignant lesions. These excellent objectives are met.
Audience: The audience is dermatology residents and dermatologists who did not learn dermoscopy in their training.
Features: The author states that use of the dermatoscope decreases the performance of unnecessary biopsies by approximately 40 percent. The subtleties that must be mastered in dermoscopy are important skills to learn. Findings of melanomas and other skin cancers can be missed if you are only examining the skin with your naked eye. The author does an excellent job of pointing out the normal and abnormal patterns of pigmentation and vascularity in benign and malignant lesions, respectively. There are many side-by-side clinical photographs of similarly appearing lesions, one benign and the other malignant.
Assessment: If you haven't yet incorporated dermoscopy into your dermatologic clinical skill set, you should. And this is the best book for learning how to do dermoscopy. Unlike other books, this one explains everything clearly and simply without overburdening and obfuscating the basic concepts with new jargon and technicalities that are unhelpful.
