KINGDOMS WILL RISE AND FALL FOR HER...
BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT

Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods-and her homicidal mother-have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm-until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

t’s always a pleasure when I start a new series that has a good mix of action, romance, and interesting world building. In A PROMISE OF FIRE, book one in the Kingmaker series, Catalia has been living and working as a soothsayer in a circus far from her northern homeland hiding out from an evil queen in whose palace she was raised. She catches the attention of Griffin, known as Beta Sinta, who with his family conquered the southern province of Sinta that had been run by royals who cared nothing for their people except for the taxes the paid and forced labor provided. Cat has some very strong magical talent including being known as a Kingmaker; she can tell who is lying, but at a great physical cost. The warlord Griffin needs Cat as she is a powerful weapon to help retain his kingdom which has little magic so he takes her, and on the journey to his home, she discovers that though he is her captor, he has many commendable qualities. Cat is far more attracted to Griffin than she wants to admit; their verbal and physical sparing adds a lot of spice to the journey. This world is set within the background of Greek mythology with the gods and goddesses who control the destinies of magic and non-magic folk alike. Although Cat was raised in abysmal circumstances, she did not let that corrupt her soul, but she certainly has some resulting issues to deal with that affect having a relationship with Griffin. Cat has a lot of secrets and Griffin is determined to know them all. I have seen criticism that Cat is a “helpless heroine,” but I see her as a survivor who has to deal with extremely difficult situations in the past and continuing on to the present. Cat’s story needs to be viewed in the context of her world and society. She is clever, creative, and has a sassy mouth that adds to the fun. I very much enjoyed this tale of adventure, magic, and romance.

I was recommended this book from a friend and she was right. It was awesome. I read it in three days, but it only took that long because I had to work. It captured my attention and brought me into a new and creative world full of magic, god's, mythical creatures and powerful characters. I already pre-ordered the second novel. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until January to read it!

This was an interesting take on mythology. I don't usually like first person narrative but this was done very well. The action was plentiful and the dialog was witty. The romance part was slow to fully build but it fit.

I picked up A Promise of Fire at BEA in Chicago, back in 2016. Between all of the moves and life disasters and events since then, I never got around to reading it. When I was looking at my bookshelf yesterday, trying to decide what to read, it jumped out at me, and I'm glad it did. This is a fantastic novel. The characters are so well-developed, they feel like real people. The writing is superb; the pacing is spot-on. There is the right balance of action and romance, and the ending ties things up while leaving room for the sequel, which I've already bought and downloaded on my Kindle. Cat is a fantastic heroine. She has just the right amount of sass. Her horrific past is heartbreaking, and while she seems too combative and flat out abusive, it starts to make sense the more Cat reveals about herself. Griffin was a bit too "macho" for my tastes. He needed a course on toxic masculinity and then he needed to tone it down a bit. Cat can more than stand up for herself, though, and at least she called him out on his crap. Also, he took a lot of Cat's abuse, and even though he abducted her (when looking at this through an Ancient Greek mythological lens and all of the events surrounding it, it's not as annoying or awful as it would be in other contexts), he was kind and didn't deserve her wrath to the extent that she dealt it. I liked that both characters were flawed and that I didn't love everything about them, though. It made them more real. The secondary characters were just as well-developed, and I really loved Flynn and Carver. They were my two favorites, I think. The world-building and descriptions were well done, and I felt like I was there in this fantastical realm with Cat and Griffin. The plot was sound, and with all of the Greek mythology woven into a fantasy realm, that couldn't have been easy. Normally I get annoyed with characters who seem to develop Stockholm's Syndrome, I don't think that was really the case in this instance. There were a lot of sociopolitical, cultural, and religious things surrounding Cat's abduction that made it less of an abduction and more of a fate type of thing. Anyway, potential Stockholm's Syndrome aside, there was just the right mix of action and romance, and our heroine is no pansy. She can fight just as well, if not better than, the men. One thing that struck me as different in this novel is that there were large sections devoted to Cat developing relationships (friendships and a romantic relationship) with different people, and while I would have thought that would annoy me, it actually made the relationships feel more realistic and really created a rich emotional story. Overall, I'd recommend this novel to anyone who loves paranormal romance, fantasy novels, and Greek mythology. It's a wonderfully unique and genuine read.

Great

This girl had me laughing out loud at her witty, snarkey, humorous asides. She ran from a tortured childhood and joined a traveling circus where she found a family of her choice. Despite the horendous childhood she grew up to be a strong, smart, courageous woman. The characters in the book are great! You'll be pulling for them every step of their journey.

I was in the mood for a Fantasy Romance book and the blurb of this book sounded amazing. Wow! This book exceeded all my expectations. I am blown away with the world Amanda Bouchet has created. This book is refreshing, unique, adventurous and funny. Also there is just the right amount of action and romance added to perfect the story. I was intrigued and hooked from the first page. A Promise of Fire starts with Cat working as a soothsayer in a circus. She can tell when someone is lying. Griffin is a warlord who meets Cat and wants to use her for her powers. I absolutely loved their first interaction. Cat is such a smartass and isn't afraid of anything. He ends up kidnapping her and takes her with him to his home. The days on the road weren't all without pain and struggle. Cat can't stand Griffin and fights him at every turn. There's are also Griffin's brother and two friends who made this book even more enjoyable with their smart remarks and jokes. Cat really did put up a struggle and I was amazed by how long she kept it up. She has secrets that no one can know about and she is in constant danger. She doesn't want to feel anything for these men because she doesn't want to put them in harms way. The more she pushed the more they protected her. I loved every character in this book and they all added so much to this story. Cat has found her way into my top 10 favorite badass female characters. She is smart, caring, loyal and strong. Griffin was such an alpha male and he was the perfect guy for Cat. He was loyal, protective and honest. Their push and pull relationship had me laughing out loud a couple of times. They were the perfect match! This book is definitely one of my all time favorite Fantasy books. It was phenomenal and I loved the writing. I wouldn't change anything about this book. This book is a gem in the Fantasy genre and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. The ending didn't leave me hanging, so don't be afraid to start this series. Amanda Bouchet is an author to look out for!

Warning: Past Abuse This was a fantastic book with the perfect blend of fantasy and romance and I am so excited to read Amanda Bouchet’s future books. The world building is was so great, with a very rich world filled with depth and history. The land of Thalyria is so interesting with it’s Northerner’s possessing magic and it’s Southerners being just plain mortals. The presence of Gods, Goddess, Giants, Dragons, Oracles, and an abundance of magical powers and creatures weave throughout, leaving you waiting for the next surprises. There was a lot of interference by the Gods to ensure that Cat and Griffin are helped along the way; though I will say this lessened in the second half of the book. If certain Gods are so clearly behind Cat it makes me wonder why they let her be so badly hurt by Andromeda to begin with. But I guess you can just say the Gods are capricious. I’m usually not a huge fan of books written in first person but Cat has such a great voice! She’s funny, very sarcastic, and just so entertaining to read her inner thoughts. I loved that Cat was also very tough and knew how to take care of herself. She doesn’t need anyone to rescue her and she’s not afraid to do whatever it takes to protect herself and those she cares about. Griffin makes a great hero who is both tough and possessive as the mighty Warlord but also sweet and gentle when he’s confronted with Cat’s fears and insecurities. These two have such great chemistry and banter and bicker in the best way. I loved watching Cat learn to trust Griffin and begin to soften as well as watch Griffin really take it up a notch when he realizes that Cat is meant for him. The supporting characters are just as interesting and I found myself falling completely in love with Beta Team. I hope there will be plenty of Flynn, Kato, and Carver in the next books. I do wish this book had a map so I could better understand the layout of Thalyria; it’s not too complicated but I always enjoy having a visual for books like this.

This is an excellent boot, I enjoyed it so much that I bought the second book in the series halfway into the first one. I look forward to the final book in the series.

The world the author created is wonderful. There’s Greek Gods, magic, dragons, vengeful villains, Khal Drogo… I mean, sexy warlords named Griffin, and aside from Cat's very immature nature, this story has an amazing line-up of characters. I just really wish Cat wasn’t so freaking frustrating. I know that her banter is supposed to be amusing and funny but I really just wanted to strangle the girl. I hope the second book shows some character growth for her because she needs it.

Promise of Fire is one of those books that once you start reading it, you won’t be able to stop. The world that Bouchet has created is fascinating. Greek Gods, dragons, magic, and unforgettable characters – what more could I ask for? Cat and Griffin have become one of my favorite couples. The tension between these two had me rooting for them throughout the book. I guess what they have could be called EPIC. The secondary characters are just as likeable. I would find myself thinking of the team as “grinning idiots.” And I say this with love because what’s not to love when you have three warriors whose fierce loyalty goes beyond anything that Cat has ever experienced. Cat’s world is brutal and has made her stronger for it. She’s fierce - one of the things that I love about my heroines. I can only imagine what book 2 has in store for the Beta Team. I’m thinking it’s about to go down for Cat and she’s going to have to face her past head on and I’m dreading the outcome. But who knows, she’s like a cat with nine lives. I’m ready to dive into the next book right now.
