A Scandalous Season by Nancy Lawrence

Headstrong Lady Eleanor Chilton is determined to marry a country gentleman of her own choosing. But when her father insists that she have a London Season, she resolves to be so disagreeable, no man will even dance with her. Her icy demeanor and unpleasant words soon repel every dandy who makes her acquaintance – including Sir Andrew de Ardescote, London's most sought-after bachelor.

Sir Andrew is not used to being snubbed, and he doesn't take to it kindly, even though the contrary young lady is quite the loveliest creature he's ever met. He'll have his revenge: A simple wager with friends that he will be the first to melt the icy young maiden's heart with a kiss.

As he sets about charming Lady Eleanor to fall in love with him, it isn't long before Sir Andrew realizes he's the one in danger of losing his heart.

Ms. Lawrence has crafted a wonderful Regency romance with a well-matched set of lovers whose antics during the London season make for a witty read that had me chucking out loud numerous times. A determined Eleanor pulls no punches when meeting toplofty Corintian Andrew at her come out ball. Simply put, she just wants to skip the season and go home, so she feels that by publically snubbing Andrew, a fashionable Corinthian who makes or breaks people socially, she will quickly meet her goal to be returned to her home in the country. While Eleanor intrigues the ever prudent Andrew because she doesn't fall at his feet like so many other debutantes have done, he is so angered by her refusal to dance with him that he makes a most imprudent wager while in his cups. Once sober, Andrew is torn over the gentleman's wager he's made. To forfeit the bet will harm his reputation as a gentleman; to go through with it means he has to devise a way to get Eleanor to willingly kiss him before a witness, which will ruin her reputation. This makes for a most enchanting dilemma!
