Light-weight story. The author wrote a plodding, not funny comedy of errors starting with a bachelor auction for the humane society (in Regency England?... not likely) and finishes with abrupt, generic premarital sex. Forced myself to finish reading so I would't totally regret the purchase.

Frances is in love with Charlie, and she's bound and determined to get her guy. She buys him at a charity auction. But, he's not interested in seeing if they'll suit and refuses to grant her wish of a kiss. This, plus some other unfortunate events and rumors, leads her to believe he not only doesn't share her affection, he may, in fact, be light on the instep. And, so begins twists and turns of the dance of Charlie's pursuit of her affection, a kiss, another auction, a bit of persuading, and a waltz, that finally leads these two lovers to their own Happily Ever After.

What a wild ride to love! Miss Frances Birmingham is an educated and intelligent woman who is not afraid to express herself in unorthodox ways. Charlie Holloway is handsome and smart. He does not enjoy the many restrictions of polite society. He wants to be a tutor. Imagine his surprise when Frances wins him in a bachelor auction. They are attracted to each other and Frances believes that she might find love with him. A misunderstanding that could have far reaching consequences keeps them apart. A Secret Affair is a sexy, titillating story of romance with a HEA. The fun is how Frances and Charlie get there. This is the first book that I've read by Valerie Bowman but it won't be the last. I love her fast paced plot and tongue in cheek look at society. You'll like all her characters and want to know their story. This is a perfect summer book to enjoy while you relax.
