ACTING LIONS
Penny Templeton leaves no stone unturned in her examination of the craft and business of acting. It’s a thoughtful and inspired look into an art which she presents as both a calling and a career, and is a must-read for both beginning and veteran actors. The book covers everything from the history of the craft, technique, development of the actor, and the application of all that artistry in today’s world. She does a remarkable job of showing the evolution of technique from master teachers like Stanislavski and Stella Adler, or Lee Strasberg and Sanford Meisner to her own set of acting exercises that allow the actor to have a structure to their work and process; but to also be released and free within that structure. It’s important because it’s that structure that allows an actor to not only grow as artist, but to feel confident whether in an audition, rehearsal, or performance.
The book also gives a realistic and practical look at the business of acting. It’s a hard and difficult pursuit, but the book offers a concise picture of the various parts of the industry (casting directors, agents, directors, producers) and how to navigate through them. It even goes into the process of being on set breaking down everything from hair and make up, blocking rehearsals and finally shooting. For someone just entering the business that sort of thing can seem overwhelming.
It’s also a good refresher for the working actor as well. An old dog can always learn new tricks. It really is a solid breakdown of the ins and outs of the “job” part of being an actor.

About the Author

PENNY TEMPLETON

Penny Templeton’s artistry is the culmination of four generations of theatre actresses. Although Penny was warned by her family not to go on the Stage, she embraced her legacy and began performing and studying under such masters as Paul Sorvino and Wynn Handman. Highlights of her career include starring in Joyce Carol Oates’ I Stand Before You Naked at the American Place Theatre, and as Paul Sorvino’s wife in All The King’s Men.
Her unique teaching methods and techniques have garnered awareness and recognition from industry peers, including articles in national magazines, and as a finalist Judge for the New York Film Festival, Daytime Emmys and Cable Ace Awards. She started teaching in the early 1990’s, and opened the Penny Templeton Studio in Manhattan in 1994. Ms. Templeton was selected by Columbia University’s School of the Arts to teach ‘Acting for the Camera’ to third year MFA students.
Her directorial credits include the Off Broadway show, The Rise of Dorothy Hale, as well as the one man shows: F Train, and Idiot’s Guide to Life.
She is featured in Ronald Rand’s acclaimed Acting Teachers of America, and Glenn Alterman’s book, Promoting Your Acting Career. Ms. Templeton works and Skypes regularly with actors in Theatre, Film and Television in New York City, Los Angeles, throughout the United States, and all over the world.
