In Afterwar, Ms. Saintcrow imagines a near future United States in the immediate aftermath of a second civil war, an intriguing alternate history science fiction topic with much promise for imaginative storytelling and thoughtful contruction of a rich, complex background story. Unfortunately, Ms. Saintcrow does not pursue such a direction. Early on in the story, it is apparent that the villians are recreated Nazis who follow a thinly veiled Trump like figure and fulfill the racist, fundamental, and uneducated stereotypes of Trump supporters. The heros are a multicultural, tolerant lot who stand up to the villians to save America. Thus, this book is more a therapeutic catharsis for the author sold as science fiction.
