Against All Odds by Danielle Steel

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The wise, moving new novel from Danielle Steel, whose many bestselling tales have made her one of America’s favorite authors

Taking chances is part of life, but when you bet your future against the odds, it’s a high-risk game. Kate Madison’s stylish resale shop has been a big SoHo success, supporting her and her four kids since her husband’s untimely death. Now her children are grown and ready to forge lives of their own. And they all choose to play against the odds, to their mother’s dismay.

Isabelle, a dedicated attorney, is in line to make partner at her Wall Street firm when she falls for a client she represents in a criminal case. She tells herself she can make a life with him—but can she? Julie, a young designer, meets a man who seems too good to be true and falls under his spell. She marries him quickly, gives up her job, and moves to Los Angeles to be at his side—but is all what it seems? Justin is a struggling writer who pushes for children with his partner before they’re financially or emotionally ready. Will the strain on the relationship take too high a toll? And Willie, the youngest, a tech expert, makes a choice that shocks them all, with a woman twelve years older.

Kate—loving, supportive, and outspoken—can’t keep her children from playing against the odds. Can the odds be beaten? Not often—as her children have to learn for themselves. For Kate, the hardest lesson will be that she can’t protect the children she loves from the choices they make—but can only love them as they make them.

Enjoyed this story. It's not easy being a mother and standing by while your children make mistakes.

This is quick great Summer read, but anyone who is an avid reader may find some problems with the book. In this book, Danielle Steel's writing style is extremely redundant. She tends to mention the same thing multiple times on the same page though she may word it differently. The book spends time giving you the background of the various characters , just to put them all in tumultuous situations. Once that occurs, the rest of the book is spent on the various different characters and how they get out of those situations. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but when there are 4 characters all going through hard times, it seems as though the ending of the book is rushed and spent trying to tie up those loose ends. This is definitely a book that could've benefitted from some sort of sequel. Overall I got through the book in about a day or two, but the things I mentioned did not go unnoticed and served as a nuisance while trying to get through the book.

Against all odds is a contemporary fiction novel written about Kate and her four children. Kate is a widow and has her own business selling second-hand designer/antique clothes. Her children are her main focus. The novel is all about Kate’s life and her children’s trials and tribulations. Being a long time Danielle Steel reader, I was expecting the same lyrical and descriptive literature I am accustomed to. The author does not disappoint in providing a smooth and steady pace of an easy reading plot and character introduction. What I found to be tedious was the fact that half way through the book, I was still waiting for something to happen. The story begins with Kate and provides a long introduction explaining her past and how she has gotten as far as she has. Then the author individually introduces the children and their living status, their relationships and other interesting factors about them. However, nothing thrilling happens until 60% of the book has been read. Even then, it appeared to be rushed just to add the extra excitement, in case the reader was falling asleep midway. I found this to be very disappointing. There are matters of rape, abuse, sexual orientation, death, and drugs all squeezed in the last chapters of the book. Ironically, against all odds, the storyline displays and discusses the avenues each of the characters take and how they end up surviving each ordeal. I recommend this book to the patient readers that don’t seek gratification from the beginning.

I have read Danielle Steel for decades...all time fav remains Thurston House! With her last 4-6 books I have played a made up game....I read the 1st 50-75 pages and then write down my prediction for the characters. Then I skip to the last 50-75 pages and read to discover if my predictions are accurate or different. My average is about 92% accurate. Think I might be tired of this game...too predictable. Good luck and happy reading!
