Overview

The twinkling throwback ballad "That's You" preceded Algorithm by seven months as the album's lead single. Some outlets referred to it as a Silk Sonic collaboration, which was partially true and a bit misleading. The song was co-written and co-produced by main Silk Sonic associate D'Mile and one-half of the duo, Bruno Mars, but D'Mile and Lucky Daye's tight alliance predates that of Mars and Anderson .Paak. Something as early as "Real Games," off Daye's 2019 debut, would require little adjustment to sound tailored for An Evening with Silk Sonic. Otherwise, Algorithm is the sound of Daye and D'Mile continuing to make progressive R&B that builds from classic soul and funk, and the two are still game to add pop and rock elements and experiment a little. The majority of the first half is as strong as any given section of 2022's Candydrip. "HERicane" radiates the joy of new love. The smitten "Soft" is a rocking shuffle with a delightfully odd instrumental tangent aided by keyboardist Michael Hunter and guitarist Livvy Bennett (both of Mamalarky). Daye is as captivating when he's in a state of longing, as on the dreamy "Pin," where D'Mile and company are just as effective at evoking the ache of sensing that ecstasy is just beyond reach. After a couple oddball numbers, Algorithm regains focus with loose and strutting funk for Daye to detail the charms of a temptress. It's a well-placed lead-in to "That's You" (Daye's first number one single on the Adult R&B Airplay chart), a sure highlight followed by a duet with dynamo-mode RAYE, containing a subtle and gorgeous twist. A sequence of high-quality deep cuts heavy in emotion ends with a surging ballad -- Daye repentant, on his knees, vocally pulling out all the stops, yet feeling every word. ~ Andy Kellman
