Alpha-Phonics A Primer for Beginning Readers by Samuel L Blumenfeld

This is the NEW 2018 version of Alpha-Phonics. Remember this is the ONE & ONLY ORIGINAL Alpha-Phonics! AND is at a NEW LOW PRICE!: ONLY $ 22.95 - the same price it sold for in 1989! - 28 years ago! Alpha-Phonics is a systematic phonics instruction program used by 100s of thousands since it was introduced in the late 1970's. Alpha-Phonics is probably the simplest, most effective and reasonably priced phonics instruction programs available. HERE IS WHY IT WORKS SO WELL: IT IS SIMPLE!! There are only 44 phonograms (Sounds) the child needs to learn in order to read. Reading, contrary to what you have been told, is easy to teach because all you have to do is teach the student to SOUND OUT the words they want to read. At first they sound the words out aloud, later they do it in their head silently. That is ALL there is to teaching reading. MOM get this: All 128 Lessons in Alpha-Phonics are covered in ONLY 14 pages of instructions for you. Students begin with short vowels putting together simple words (Like a with m = am or a with s = as) and progress to the more advanced words. With Alpha-Phonics the beginner can be reading simple sentences by lesson three, and that can even be on the first day! Other reading instruction programs try to do way too much. They inject grammar, pictures and other material, needlessly complicating the task. Alpha-Phonics just teaches reading only. Alpha-Phonics has as a BONUS: you teach SPELLING easily as you go (through simple dictation). Alpha-Phonics easily introduces over 3,500 words in its simple 128 lessons. Some students can learn to read in only months. Alpha-Phonics also works very well for older students, even grown adults who need remediation.
Is there a negative about Alpha-Phonics? Yes. In the past 30 years we have heard only one criticism (Only a few times). It is: Some Moms say they think their child can become bored when taught by Alpha-Phonics. Why? Parents have been convinced that learning has to be fun-time. They have been led to believe games, card decks, cartoons/pictures, spin the needle tricks, etc., make it fun. They feel they have to entertain their kids while teaching. But, this unnecessarily slows down the process. With Alpha-Phonics the student can actually be READING simple sentences even day ONE! Students do see lists of words in Alpha-Phonics lessons, but they QUICKLY are actually READING those words; they are accomplishing, instead of being entertained. The Bells and Whistles in other programs slow the process and cost time and money $$. The huge sense of success in actually reading quickly overcomes any other consideration. We almost forgot the SUPER BONUS: Many ADULTS become BETTER readers while teaching their child! The lessons for the Student are in LARGE TYPE on 8 ½ X11 pages meaning you can instruct him/her DIRECTLY from the book. Nothing need be copied on separate paper. Makes everything much easier than if it were on 5 X 8 pages. Alpha-Phonic is highly recommended by leading Homeschooling curriculum reviewers such as Mary Pride, Cathy Duffy, Karen Andreola. I have sucessfully used this book to teach 3 of my children to read. My girlfriend has taught English As A Second Language to adults, with this book. There is no reason to spend a fortune for all the bells and whistles that come with most reading programs. The teachers manual is included in the back of the book.

I cannot brag this product up enough. I started working through this program with my son when he was 3. He is now 4 and he is progressing through the book wonderfully. Before we started the program I had him watch leap Frog Letter Factory and/or the Amazing Alphabet daily. By the time he was 3 1/2, he was ready to begin Alpha Phonic. We work through Alpha Phonics slowly. If he gets through a lesson very easily, we move on to the next lesson the next day. If he struggles even a little, we repeat the lesson the next day. Also, when we come to a lesson that has four pages of word lists, we do one page a day. I would do the entire lesson in a day if he were not so young. After we finish a lesson, I have him write a few words off his word or if he reads sentences that day, I have him write a sentence. This way he practices reading and writing. We spend about 10 minutes a day completing an Alpha Phonics lesson. The lessons are very easy to teach, there is a short explanation of how to teach the lessons in the back of the book. The instructions are short and could not be easier to understand. I have the computer disc with an explanation of the lessons. I used it a couple of times, but it is much easier for me to quickly read the instructions in the back of the book. Very very little teacher prep time with this program. My son is my third child and I would have never dreamed of having a 4 year old who reads so well. The best part is, he is not pushed. He learns far more than he would at preschool and Alpha phonics requires very little of his time. Users can also buy the workbook and/or readers. I personally do not believe either are necessary. I have no desire to add anything to the primer. However, I did read How to Tudor before starting Alpha Phonics. I highly recommend this book. It taught me a ton about teaching a child to read, write, and do arithmetic. I took thorough notes! I strongly believe that anyone who tries Alpha Phonics could not honestly recommend any other program over Alpha Phonics. Alpha Phonics is quite simply as good as it gets. I hope this helps someone. I write a great deal of reviews, but probably of everything I have ever reviewed, this is the item I recommend most.

I taught my son to read with this book 25 years ago when he was 5. At the same time, little did I know my 2 year old daughter was using it to teach herself to read!! When my son entered third grade, he was reading at an 8th grade level, and my daughter entered first grade, she was reading at a 6th grade level! I homeschooled them until then, the main reason being I wanted to teach them to read. I just purchased this book again to teach my grand daughter to read. My grand daughter is 2 and ready to learn! This book is well worth the money, and now even comes with a DVD!

The previous reviews are right on. I have found Alpha-Phonics so effective with my own kids that I'd like to add a word or two. Alphaphonics is a book that teaches children to read in a series of "lessons" that increase in difficulty. What makes this different from many other reading programs is that it is just reading, no bells and whistles, no cartoons, no fancy color pictures, just combining sounds to form words. That is the beauty of Alphaphonics, because there is very little to distract a wiggly 5 year old. To use this program effectively a child does need to have some knowledge of letters, but they will learn the letter sounds as they go. There are even some pages for kids who need to learn the letters first. Also, Alpha-Phonics has the rare distinction of being a better system that is better priced as well!

I have bought many different types of reading programs (paying big $$$) for my 5 year old daughter. None of them came close to teaching her what this simple book did. She has ADD and gets distracted easily so all the other programs were great looking but she could only focus on the pictures. Alpha Phonics may not have all the neat bells and whistles but it gets the job done better than any of the programs that do. She was actually able to focus on the lesson and after just a few weeks (15min/day) she was able to read beginner books. This year she started Kindergarten and her teacher was amazed that she could read sentences with ease. This book also improved her vocabulary because it has many words that she didn't know and would ask me what they meant. The teacher decided to test her reading and she was at a 2nd grade reading level. The kids in her class were only being taught sight words. It's almost the end of the school year now and they don't really know how to read using phonics yet. They've just been memorizing words. This was the best investment I have ever made. I highly recommend it to anyone who has used other methods that have not worked. I only wish I had known about it sooner so that I wouldn't have wasted so much money on the other programs.

WE SPENT MONTHS RESEARCHING WHAT TO DO FOR OUR BRIGHT THIRD GRADER WHO WE WERE TOLD HAD DYSLEXIA. (AFTER RESEARCHING EXTENSIVELY, WE ALONG WITH MOST EXPERTS, HAVE CONCLUDED DYSLEXIA IS ANOTHER WORD FOR SOMEONE WHO IS EDUCATIONALLY DISABLED, NOT PROPERLY BEEN TAUGHT TO READ!) NO ONE IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT COULD HELP US OR GUIDE US HOW TO HELP HIM, EVEN THE SO CALLED READING EXPERTS! THE DISTRICT OFFERS NO REMEDIAL RESOURCES SPECIFIC TO OUR CHILD'S NEEDS, OTHER THAN WANTING TO PUT THEM IN SPECIAL ED.
ALPHA PHONICS WAS THE ANSWER. WE FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS, EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW! HE IS NOW READING AT GRADE LEVEL, AND WE HAVEN'T EVEN YET COMPLETED ALL THE LESSONS. BECAUSE HE NOW CAN READ AT GRADE LEVEL, HE IS ABOVE AVERAGE IN MATH. AMZING WHAT A CHILD CAN DO ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TAUGHT TO READ. HIS SELF ESTEEM IS HIGH AND HE IS NOW A DIFFERENT KID! ALPHA PHONICS ALSO PROPELLED OUR YOUNGEST CHILD A GRADE LEVEL HIGHER.
THE COST IS SO AFFORDABLE AND ANYONE CAN USE IT TO HELP OR TEACH ANOTHER TO READ. THE WORK BOOK IS A GREAT ADDITION.
